Kevin's Watch Height Index
I am gathering information for a psychological and sociological profile of the Watch. Little by little I will siphon willing information from my subjects in order to gain leverage, as John Travolta might say in Battlefield Earth.
But mostly I'm just interested. How tall or short are you ragamuffins?
Somehow I am convinced that most fantasy fans are below average height.
Prove me wrong! Let's create a median height together and build a tower to the heavens.
I am a little over 6'2".

Heh...your poll answers will be different from your actual data answers if peeps actually tell you. Just thought that could make for some funny stuff.
For instance 5'5"-6' category covers a range from pretty far below average to a bit above above average [for u.s. men]
Anyway, I'll play...5'10, which I think is almost exactly average in the u.s.?
[my impression of fantasy fans is not that they're short...but they definitely are near-sighted]

the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

I suppose after a lot of replies here we could take that into consideration when it seems appropriate to begin making an average--if at all. I'm mostly just interested in each individual's height.I'm Murrin wrote:Should probably look at male and female seperately for things like this.
I'm just not sure two separate topics would be the answer, if that's what you're alluding to.
If people are afraid of stating their height I will gladly give them a few inches.

vraith has a point... if the median ends up in "5.5-6," then we might not be distinguish our sample's median from the larger population's.
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."

"In spite of much that militates against quietness there are people who still read books. They are the people who keep me going."

If individuals actually state their height in text form this problem is alleviated.
I could go in and catalogue the responses.
I suppose people are wanting anonymity for some strange reason.
I didn't think we would need all the choices from <5'0" to 6'5" + listed by every inch as that would've made the poll long and ungainly. The median is still achieved if the most votes go into 5'5"-6'0" as we know the median is of average height. If everyone votes shorter it's shorter.
I could make another topic with all the heights represented? A Height Index Thread Redux!

Frosty-
C = 5/9 (F - 32)
F = (9/5)C + 32
*ducks and runs*
But yeah... I have no sense of quantity for the units I'm unfamiliar with.
And I never convert back and forth if I'm having a conversation, in spite of being a total math geek...
If I hear a temp in celsius, I'm like "Oh, okay.."
(And then I wonder, "Is that extreme for this time of year, or what?" and "Extremely hot or cold? Or are they emphasizing this because it's a really nice comfortable temp?")

I'm 161 cm, a giant like Frostheart. (Haha, see what I did there?
)
Which, if my conversion skills are accurate, is about the same as Giant aliantha's 5ft, 3.5 inchles.
So Worm, apart from Iolanthe and Linna - who's cagily evaded a direct answer - your fantasy fans are short-arses theory seems to be correct, at least for female fantasy fans.
ETA: *inchles. This is a new unit of measurement for when the subject(s) being measured are particularly lovely.

Thank you. I knew I was right. I will continue to take notes and calculate the implications as people respond.
I am looking not just for height data but the way people respond and how their responses change when others divulge their height.
I will also be needing three of you to volunteer your real names.
Thank you.

Just kidding. Nice to meet you, Dags.

Let's find out how short the rest of these people are.
