berek question

Post by ceallaighq »

 Reading The Illearth War...

The scene in the bar made it seem like Berek was from Earth. Is that true?

Oh and in response to another thread... Bannor is the hottie.

Well, if that kind of question could be answered absolutely, the whole Unbelief aspect of the books would be gone. That being said, no, Berek was not from the Earth that Covenant was from.

Watch out for those Haruchai though. I gather their women are pregnant as often as possible.

I've never been able to decide if Berek was from our world or not. however, i doubt the scene in the bar proves anything. not too much of a spoiler, but this is from The Power That Preserves
"You called me Berek," Covenant croaked as if he were strangling on the sepulchral air of the house.
"A leper," she breathed. "Oh, hell! I might've kissed you. Buster, you sure had me fooled. You look a hell of a lot like a friend of mine."
"Berek," Covenant groaned.
"What-'Berek'? You heard me wrong. I said, 'Berrett.' Berrett Williams is a friend of mine. He and I go way back.
Now maybe in the remote realm of possibility Berek's real name before coming to the land was Barrett Williams?

Welcome to the watch!
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I just read this scene last night. I don't think it was anything more than coincidental mistaken identity. Of course, as with everything in Covenant's life, it happens at the worst time!

As the little spoiler above shows, I am right!

He sure was angry when he got summoned. I've read about half of this book many years ago, but so far, I remember nothing....something about the High Lord Elena to be remembered, I think.....I was stunned when I was introduced to Hile Troy! Holy Cow!

Can't wait to read more.

Thanks for the welcome and the info everybody. Based on the PTP quote, I guess it was just mistaken identity. But who knows...

I'm so happy to have found this board!! I read these books when I was a kid. I recently reread Lord of the Rings and thought what the heck why not reread Thomas Covenant. I remember the major characters, plot but I've forgotten much more than I remember. Look forward to discussing it more with you all. :D

She actually said Berret. But Stephen Donaldson conveniently made Thomas hearing crap.
