Seriously, tho, I'm into handmade Nordic/Eastern European crafts, and likely to burn money on the Tallinn market during my joulu vacation, or in shops akin to this. www.oldehansa.ee/ I need a few pairs of new, thick woolen socks more than plastic zombie lawn gnomes; they just get buried in the snow and socks become an appreciated item when the thermometer screams -25C.

Or optionally some crap to augment my histrenactment costume.

Sheesh, I didn't even get as far as you guys did but still felt I wasted too much time on it!!

It's fun because most of the stuff is so ridiculous, although i actually do know people who would love the Batman Snuggie, for example... I'll probably never buy a blessed thing there, unless maybe for a gamer nephew or something.

Frosty, I LOVE the re-enactor costume and if I had time and fundage would love to do that sort of thing. I fell in love with Viking women's dress at some point.

Thanks, yes, the garb's of my own make, save for the accessories (knife, tarsoly, belt, boots, hat...), which I've collected bit by bit from various tiny shops and events/markets. This is c. 10th century Eastern Viking type, with influences from the Varangian route and the Baltic-Finnic culture. I originally picked the yellow/blue color scheme somewhat along the Eura male grave findings: traces of a yellow silk kaftan was found in one, and the deep indigo, especially in cloaks, was an indication of wealth in the Finnish communities of that time.

Mine's however a male costume. A woman's attire (a reconstruction based on findings in Luistari, Eura) looks like this:

I'm documenting the kaftan for other purposes, so I actually have some fresh detail photos. Has taken quite a while, and it's still partially in progress; I keep adding new strips of embroidered silk on occasion.

Some other shots from that Rosala event. You can forget horned helmets and ragged strips of fur; those have nothing to do with actual Vikings.

Many years ago I was at a craft fair and a woman there said, "You must be a fiber artist." "Yes, how did you know?" "You touch everything." She was smiling, but it was true.

(I mostly sew now, as knitting, crocheting, and embroidery took too much toll on my carpal tunnel.)

Loved the piles of yarn too, though I only purchased a small skein for some future nalbinding practice. They were on the expensive side--hand-dyed with various self-collected plants, mushrooms, and mosses. These people can be really meticulous when it comes to their craft; some have a degree approximately called artisan of prehistoric techniques in English.

Nah, just my little Þórr statuette from Akureyri tagging along.

I do however have a small bronze Óðinn charm sewn onto a canvas belt pouch.
