Kevin's Watch Book Club - A Proposal

Post by I'm Murrin »

I'm always looking out for interesting reads (and I'm also usually after motivation to remember to pick up that book I started), and I like discussing the books I read as well. I figure a lot of people on this board are similar.

So I had an idea.

I'd like to propose setting up a KW book club. Every month, we'd select a new book to read - by collating member suggestions and running a poll. We'd all have the following month to read the selected book, and then a topic would be posted to discuss it.

I'd run the book club out of this forum, so the focus would be on SFF books, but casting as wide a net as possible for selections. Right now, I'd like to gauge interest in the idea.

So, vote. Tell me if you'd take part. I hope we can share some interesting reads in 2013.

Although I like the idea, I know myself well enough that I won't join in. GT games aside, I'm abysmal when it comes to deadlines and obligations.

Good idea, Murrin! I'd be interested. I mightn't be able to do it every month but I'd do my best.

I'd probably be an on-off participant if there were such a club.

Sounds interesting, but I have so many books in the queue or half-read that I don't think I'd be a consistent participant.

I voted yes, but I can't guarantee I'd have the time.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

My problem with the group reads is that if I really like a book, I end up saying "screw it" and just go on and read the whole book on my own. A book a month might actually work better for me.

Yeah, that's the idea, really. You get a month to read it in your own time.

Well, I figure we've got a bit of interest here. I might just set things rolling now and see how it goes.

I could try but I'd be on again off again and I have a tough time slogging through a book if I don't like it...

I know some people who use "book club" as an excuse to throw a party every month. Oh, they pick a book for the month, and most people intend to read it, but as I understand it, very few people do -- but they come to the party anyhow.

Then they get indignant when the people who DID read it criticize it

That's why only people who have read the selection should be allowed to vote on the next month selection... that way I could dominate the club
