and one of the coolest things ever...

we have a street in Houston called Harwin. an Indian neighborhood has grown up around it, they call it the Ghandi district.

I buy Julie a purse there very year, and a wallet to go with it. along with some costume jewelry. we were there and Julie was in a store looking for a gift for me while I wait outside. they directed her to a video store. so we went and Julie spent a good fifteen minutes in there. and I had absolutely no idea what she bought for me.

it was the following...

a dvd called - Ferrari Ki Sawaari
a cd - the soundtrack to Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
a box of fruit biscuits (imported from India)
six small candies (7 Star/7 Up, Gogo & Shahi Meva)
and a cricket ball!!! (Kookaburra Match)

it was honestly so well thought out and such a surprise. it makes me so proud and happy to be married to such a thoughtful woman.

Books
The Norman Conquest, Marc Morris (large hard back)
Daughter of Regals, SD (paperback)
A 1960s childhood, Paul Feeney (from my sister, quite unexpected, wonderful book, so many things I had forgotten - Jubblies, Scoubidous and the skipping rhymes that went with the very long rope for example)

Also
A cloth bag in a pouch with my name on it! (I have had to rescue this from the dog three times as he seems to have taken a liking to it)
A purse (to put money in, what you Americans call a purse we call a handbag)
Kindle
Cliff Richard Calendar (these last three from my husband)
Box of choccies (from next door)

But my best Christmas present was seeing my 7 year old grandson's face when he unwrapped the keyboard we bought him. He asked me three times if it was really his to keep. By the time we left on Boxing Day night he had almost got the first two lines of Away in a Manger. I have promised to buy some manuscript paper to teach him some notes.
I am playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order!

Have you read the series before, deer?

If not, feel free to do something similar to what I did with the A Fresh Journey to the Tower thread.

My gift from the Dams was having Beorn flown out and offered hospitality for two full weeks. It had been seven months since I had seen him. While it was tough seeing him leave Chr-stmas night, a better gift could not have been given.

I'll start with comments...
Null, I wonder what you'll think of Gravity's Rainbow.

Deer: ditto what menolly said, and an additional...kinda like the Gap book 1 doesn't really get to the good stuff [unlike the Gap, it falls apart after book 3 or so instead of getting better...but that's just me perhaps.]

Got:
Ayn Rand "we the living"
Colbert "america again"
Soundgarden "King Animal"...I'll talk about this probably in the Z begun thread on them.
Lots of clothes my wife thinks I'll look good in in the new environment we inhabit most of the year now. [Minnesota...less snow, but way more freeze your balls/nips off days than upstate NY]
"Keen" brand boots. [minnesota, again].
Sig-man, Libtard, Stupid piece of shit. change your text color to brown. Mr. Reliable, bullshit-slinging liarFucker-user.
the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.
"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

An assortment of fine cigars, including an Ashton VSG torpedo that was flat out spectacular

An assortment of hot sauces, in a cardboard suitcase

A valet for the dresser

A set of crystal barware

Deer, thanks for the reminder about Wool. I just went and bought it for my Kindle. :)

Gifts from the kids:
Wagamama Cookbook
Nook travel stand
And this guy

From my friend Kim:
A copy of AATE with the UK cover
A portable, battery-operated Ott Lite
All in a Vera Bradley shopping-bag-style tote bag

From my fellow book club members:
Several bars of handmade glycerin soap
A couple of ornaments for the tree
A very cool handmade necklace with a pendant made of polymer clay -- I'll post a picture, maybe, if I think of it later

From my attorneys:
Way too much in gift cards. So far I've bought the Kindle (the eInk screen kind, not a Fire), a 32" TV and a swivel stand for it, a desktop color laser printer, and some odds and ends, and I've still got gift card left over 8O

From one of the attorneys I'm backup for:
A box of almond toffee (already gone!)
A bottle of wine that he got from a client and didn't want

Oh, and from me, for me ;) :
The Indies Unlimited 203 Writing Stimulus Package and Planner
365 Days of Walking the Red Road
And a calendar of vintage Denver postcards, partly because it includes one of the Denver Zephyr, a passenger train that ran between Denver and Chicago in the early part of the 20th century. My grandfather worked on the railroad that ran the train, and I've got some memorabilia from it -- a set of 4 coasters and a matchbox cover. :)

A bottle of Southern Comfort.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

To be honest, I think the last King I read was Carrie or 'Salem's Lot when I was in high school!! So no, I haven't read the series, nor The Stand. I started reading it and am thoroughly enjoying.

I got a belated gift in Kano, a pair of Touareg-crafted silver earrings.

Should I say "congrats on the move"? Or "welcome to the midwest"? Or "brutal; that's a LOT of snow."
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
