It will be funny if SD gets the staff and no more votes arrive now. way, do you have extra tasks or something for ties?

And about my twitter posts - in case they were actually enough unclear. LF boasts; moksha tries as well, but he doesn't get twitter, particularly the size limit; and he stops boasting on noticing Lord Mhoram, complains to LF about him and tries to exchange - the Ravers deal with Covenant, LF deals with Mhoram. LF says no deal.

The answers to the Staff of Immunity questions are:
  1. From Revelstone, in which direction is the Haruchai homeland?
    • West and South. (Half credit for West.)
In The Illearth War was wrote:In this direction, the plateau [above Revelstone] rose into rumpled hills; and soon, on their left, away from the cliff, they began to pass herds of grazing cattle. Cattleherds saluted the High Lord ceremoniously, and she responded with quiet bows. Later, she and Covenant crossed a hilltop from which they could see westward across the width of the upland. There, beyond the swift river that ran south toward the bead of Furl Falls, were fields where crops of wheat and maize rippled in the breeze. And a league behind the grazeland and the river and the fields stood the mountains, rising rugged and grand out of the hills. The peaks were snow-clad, and their white bemantling made them look hoary and aloof-sheer, wild, and irreproachable. The Haruchai lived west and south in this same range.
  2. How many honorary degrees did Donaldson receive, and from where?
    • Two.
      On StephenRDonaldson.com was wrote:LittD (honorary)
The College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, 1993

      LittD (honorary)
The University of St. Andrews, Scotland, 2009
  3. What is the Chronicles connection to the movie "The Patriot"?
    • Two of the producers of "The Patriot" obtained the option to produce a Thomas Covenant movie.
And now to Announce the Winners of Round 3
  • Image
Here is how I tally the votes:
  • Effaeldm: 2 votes
  • Menolly: 3 votes
  • Savor Dam: 5 votes
Here is how I tally the Survivors' answers to the Staff of Immunity questions:
  • Effaeldm: 0 correct
  • Menolly: 1.5 correct
  • Savor Dam: 2.5 correct
So the winner of the Staff of Immunity is:
Spoiler
Savor Dam!
All of which means that the following person has been voted out of the swamp:
Spoiler
Effaeldm!
That Survivor walks away with total winnings in cash and prizes of: 100 WGD.

The other two Survivors will stay to compete in the last and final round.

(There is no Staff of Immunity in the final round.)

(I myself voted for SD.)

Congrats, Menolly and SD! Sarge arrived like a real superhero - at the very last moment. Or was it the last moment because he arrived?

My Staff answers:

2. How many honorary degrees did Donaldson receive, and from where?

Too many to count, well, at least it had to be so

3. What is the Chronicles connection to the movie "The Patriot"?

The Chrons infuse people with something kind of like patriotism, but to a place they haven't even seen :D

If Sarge hadn't charged in to vote the day, if I was Menolly and Effy, I'd rather wear matching Ties than to be declared a Stale Mate

OK...I will talk about the staff answers, not in general, but specifically as to why Menolly does not want to discuss them.

I owe the Win Wayfriend's Money community (and Way especially) a mea culpa. I have already apologized to Menolly personally, but offer that apology again here publicly for not behaving entirely ethically in the Staff competition last round.

I originally submitted my Staff answers with a flawed answer to the second question, having clearly recalled the more recent St. Andrews LittD honorary degree, but not the earlier one. Subsequently, Menolly and I were discussing the contest and she alluded to there having been two honorary degrees. I then researched that, discovered the earlier LittD from Wooster, and sent Way an amended answer.

The fact that this did not change the outcome of this round's Staff competition is beside the point. Having already submitted answers, I ought not to have used infomation gained from a fellow competitor as a clue to prompt an amendment to my anwers. 8O

Menolly is "not mad, but deeply disappointed", and I entirely see her point.

...thank you.

It is just frustrating to have had the answer to the third question from you after I initially submitted, which I totally had no idea about before our discussion, and to have sat on it, and then learn you chose to not do the same. Even after verifying with you that way had accepted your initial staff answers submission before agreeing to discuss our answers with each other...

Sorry to hear about the Staff answer thing, folks. I do let people revise their answers but I have no idea why they revise them. My reasoning is there's nothing that they could do to get the the second answer that they could not have done to get the first answer. I think what happened here is more of a sportsmanship issue, but if anyone wants the rules changed, just let me know.

It's just a game, folks. If it's not all in fun, whataya doin?

Let's patch this up. Menolly, I want a soft smile from you. And SD, I want you to reminder Menolly that you're probably giving her all the money anyway. :)

Congrats to SD, and sorry about the hard feelings re the Staff of Immunity answers (and a suggestion for the future: don't discuss your answers with another contestant 'til the round is over ;) ).

Now on to the final round, which I suggest should be subtitled: The Thrilla in, uh, Washington State!

Actually, I ended up with the Staff answers I post every time at least partially due to fair play concerns and liking to cheat.

I found right on the first set of questions that I knew one answer, but I had no idea on the fish, and the chronology of the GI, I tend to read it not systematically and won't make heads or tails of the dates. Of course, forum search here, Google and Wikipedia come to mind immediately in such a situation - they're actually used in some games here, however, I thought that wasn't the case here. So, I neither felt much happy about submitting the answers honestly and not looking anywhere, nor about looking them up purposefully. So, I made a joke of them. (Though I do think Sea wasn't supposed to eat dead still. Kinny screwed up.)

And, way, if you would like to check your thorough knowledge of the GI, the current Name That Book! game is stuck for now and has a GI-related hint. I wonder if you know that one.

BTW to Effie and all: that fact that it is so easy to google the answers to so many things drives me to no end of frustration. It's a problem writing Staff questions, and it's a problem trying to create WWM games, too. There are websites out there that give you lists of rhyming words, give you all the anagrams of a word, etc. I have to design everything against this. That being said, I guess I consider it entirely fair to use every resource available to you, and if you can find an answer easily in google or wikipedia, well, then I made it too easy, but that answer is fairly obtained. In the case of the knifefish question, looking that up in wikipedia or elsewhere was probably the only way to figure out the answer!

The Test of Tentacles
  • Image

In that instant, the river erupted. Silently, water blasted upward, hurling the raft into the air, overturning it.

Behind the burst, a black tentacle flicked out of the water. It twisted, coiled, caught Lord Shetra.

Most of the Bloodguard dove clear of the fall of the raft. But Sill and Lord Hyrim were directly under it.

With Pren and Tull, Korik swam for the place where Lord Shetra had been taken. But the dark water blinded them; they could see nothing, find nothing. The river seemed to have no bottom.
Donaldson was uncharacteristically terse when describing how Lord Shetra was taken by the Lurker. In this Test, the Survivors must bolster Donaldson's sparse prose with something more poetic and insightful.

Each Survivor must write an ode to the tentacle, such as Shetra might have composed as she was dragged under the water.

An ode (for the purposes of this test) is a poem written in an elevated, dignified manner - the way the people of the Land are wont to speak. It is written to express one's feelings about an object or an event, and relates those feelings to some high, abstract ideal. (One can easilly imagine what Shetra might have been feeling at that time!) An ode can have any rhyming scheme one chooses. However, it should have three sections/verses: the strophe, the antistrophe, and the epode. The strophe and the antistrophe have the same rhyming scheme, and the epode has a different one. There is no length requirement. Examples of "Pindaric" odes abound on the internet; please avail yourself of your favorite search engine.

The title of your ode must be Ode to the Tentacle which has Caught Me.

Contestants will be judged based on humor, wit, ode lore, and knowledge of tentacular biology.

No Staff of Immunity will be awarded.

When all the entries are in, the audience will vote for the Survivor whom they consider to have surpassed the others in this contest. The Survivor with the least number of votes will leave the Sarangrave with a cash prize of 1,000 WGD. The remaining Survivor will become the newest Survivor Champion, and receive the grand prize of 10,000 WGD.

Get those odes in, Survivors!

Now Menolly and Savor Dam
Must pass Wayfriend’s final exam
Contestants now must write their odes
This poet’s joy; it just explodes!
This round’s concept I must applaud
Let’s hear no fear of work that’s flawed
Just buckle down and do your best
Be sure your Muse will do the rest
A fitting end to swampy slog
This challenge to see who’s top dog
