Favorite "Versions"?
My favorite version-song is probably Sarah Brightman's version of A Whiter Shade of Pale. I don't really like her singing voice at all, but what I DO like about it is that instead of using an organ or whatever it is Procal Harum uses throughout the original song as the backdrop, Sarah's version is fully orchestral--AMAZING! I swear--it sounds like something Bach would do when you hear A Whiter Shade of Pale in full orchestral glory.

I prefered XTC's All along the watchtower and The Bauhaus version of Ziggy Stardust.danlo wrote:I like Hendrix's version of All Along the Watch Tower better than Dylan's and Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of Voodoo Chile better than Hendrix's.

Well, even John Lennon said he was unhappy with the final version (I believe that at the time the Beatles were fighting a lot, so this song never got much production time or came out the way John Lennon wanted).
Although, you've probably never heard an early recording of Across The Universe on Anthology 2. That's probably the best one to compare with the Fiona Apple one.
Anyway, I have heard the Fiona Apple version of the song, and it is probably the best remake of a Beatles song since Siouxsie & The Banshees's "Dear Prudence".

A Perfect Circle
"Diary of a Madman / Lovesong"
Screaming at the window
Watch me die another day
Hopeless situation
Endless price I'll have to pay
Diary of a madman
Walk the line again today
Entries of confusion
Dear diary, I'm here to stay.
Sanity now and beyond me
I will always love you.
However long I stay
I will always love you.
Whatever words I say
I will always love you.
There's no choice.
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I'm hopeless
Voices in the darkness
Scream away my mental health
Can I ask a question
To help me save me from myself?
Sanity now and beyond me
I will always love you.
However long I stay
I will always love you.
Whatever words I say
I will always love you.
There's no choice.

"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I liked Faith No More's version of War Pigs, and Woodpecker from Mars.

IMHO that's bollocks. Except perhaps for "All Along the Watchtower" (even Bob himself agreed that Hendrix's version was the definitive one, and he's been playing it Hendrix-style live ever sinceRivenrock wrote:I feel the same about Bob Dylan...great song writer but mumbles like a drunk. It's often better when someone else does his stuff.

Then, on the other hand, I think Dylan's one of the coolest-sounding singers ever. That might have something to do with it.

Theo, I would like very much to argue with your logic, but I don't want to be accused of starting a Theo-logical debate....
Anyway, I always liked "Crimson & Clover" by Joan Jett, "A Little help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker, and "You Really Got Me" by Van Halen
