True Detective
I've only seen 5 of 8 episodes of Season 1, but I'm really into this show. The reason I'm behind is because I'm too cheap to have HBO except when Game of Thrones is on.
What I really like about TD is the relationship between the 2 main characters, Marty (Woody Harrelson) and Rusty (Matthew McConaughey.) Their interaction is so intense, the dialogue so great, that I could almost forget about the murder.

It's a truly great show.

I finished Season 1 last night, and I was very satisfied with the ending.
This seems like a huge risk. Marty and Rust were so great, I can't imagine starting over from scratch.I'm Murrin wrote:Yeah, American Horror Story seems to have created a market for this kind of anthology-style series, with a totally new story each season.

I disagree. The 1st season of AHS was great. Asylum was interesting but left too many things unanswered. Coven was awful.
TD was all about Rust and Marty, and the chemistry between the two actors. Hell, for that matter I could watch nothing but Rust's metaphysical ramblings for a few hours straight.
What TD also had was an incredibly strong ending (though the denouement was a little drawn out).

Spoiler
When Rust sees "the pattern" in the form of the black hole drawing him in to his destiny I was just floored. The pattern on the bodies.....the flock of birds.....The entirety of that scene was simply amazing.

Just now starting to watch True Detective (thank you, Netflix!). Friends recommended it and they're right -- it's pretty awesome. I saw the first three episodes today and am looking forward to watching the rest.

It's impossible for it to top the first season. The actors aren't nearly as strong, and it's a completely different sort of story.
I haven't watched this week's episode yet, but I'm not hating anything yet.

I've seen episode 1 and agree that it isn't nearly as good as last season (so far). It is easy to hate on this kind of sequel, that follows an excellent first season with a completely new cast of characters and situations. So in a sense it was doomed to failure from the start. It would have been safer to not even try to strike the same tone as the deeply sinister and psychological / philosophical first season, and go for something more in the straight up film noir detective genre, like Sam Spade hopped up on nihilism. So I'm not sure whether to admire their courage, succeed or fail. There's some profoundly creepy about the industrial decay of the verdant Louisiana swamps, you can get some similar creepiness out of the desert properly framed so I'm interested to see if they can pull it off.dlbpharmd wrote:Season 2 of TD is living up to (down to?) my low expectations so far.

I think the tone, the feel, and the look are all very, very good this season. Unfortunately, we're 5 episodes in, and nearly 4 full episodes are table-setting.

Cail, after watching the first three episodes I'd pretty much agree with you, I think it isn't bad and might be pretty good. We'll see how the rest of the season plays out.
