I'd forgotten about Magnum P.I. I loved it when I was growing up, but haven't seen it for a long time.
Apparently Kubrick thought de Niro wasn't psychotic enough and Williams was too psychotic for the role that Nicholson ended up playing. I agree though that Robin Williams can be creepy as hell - I saw One Hour Photo again just recently, and yep, he can play the part well.
I was just looking through Jack Nicholson's filmography, and there isn't much beyond Witches of Eastwick (which I loved) that's original. He was interesting in the Departed, but not much different to what you'd expect from him.
Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman as Michael Corleone would have been completely wrong. Warren Beatty was also offered the role of Michael Corleone. Al Pacino was perfect for that role. After Scarface though, he hasn't done a great deal of amazing work - I thought he was good in Donnie Brasco, but I can't think of too many others that stand out.

OTOH...sometimes he's just flat/lifeless/dull.
ANYWAY, he's supposedly turned down a LOT of major/big-time roles.
Gatsby [the 70's one, obviously], Butch and Sundance, The Way We Were, The Sting, Wall Street...
At least 2 of those I think he'd have done good [and much different] work: Gatsby, Wall Street.
The others...different, sure...but probably not very good.
Oh, and I don't think I said before: Yea, Robin Williams, very good at very creepy.
