Edge of Tomorrow

Post by I'm Murrin »

Went to see this last night and enjoyed it a lot. Despite it being a Tom Cruise movie, it's pretty good - a fairly smart time-travel action sci-fi.

I'd recommend it, and I'll probably read All You Need is KILL, the book it's based on, too.

It was a very enjoyable movie. Possibly the most enjoyable movie I've seen all year.

If there's one thing that bugged me about the film, though, it's that:
Spoiler
All the work you see him putting into perfecting the runs through all the repeat days make it very hard to believe they got through Paris in one run after he lost his power.
I realise they feel they have to raise the stakes to make it so there's a genuine risk, but I'm not sure it quite worked there.

That's the thing about a safety net. When you know you can't fail, it inhibits your desire to succeed.
Spoiler
So, now that there wasn't a safety net, they all knew there was just one shot.

Think about their choices at the end. Would they have even brought J team? Would they have separated or tried to gang up on the Alpha? Would Cage have continued swimming toward the Omega?
JMO.

Just saw this. Ground Hog Day for scifi'ers. I liked it a lot. I thought it was a lot of fun.
Spoiler
I just wish they wouldn't keep screwing up endings. Why does there always have to have a magical happy ending? Almost the exact same ending as Oblivion. I guess Hollywood wants what Hollywood wants.

Watched this during the week. Quitr enjoyable. I thought the death and resurrection bits were very reminiscent of some first player shooters I have played, I wonder did some of the idea for it come from that?

Saw it, loved it. I am not a Tom Cruise fan but he has been in some really good movies over the years.
Spoiler
The Emily Blunt character was quite a bitch.. Every time he turned around she was killing him off so he could start over. It gave some dark comedy to the movie that gave it more depth.

Liked it, but didn't like the ending....Way too sappy, but that's what you get from Hollywood blockbusters.

I agree. And very very similar to the ending of Oblivion.

I just rewatched this yesterday, and I have to say it really holds up. Very enjoyable film, well made.

There's one thing in the plot that bugs me, though:
Spoiler
Why, when they got the device from the general's safe, did they need to get out of the building before using it? This led to them going on a car chase (this is the second escape attempt they show, but as usual multiple trial-and-error runs are implied), having an accident, and Cage getting his blood transfusion, forcing the ending to be a one-shot. But they just needed to use the device on him immediately, in the office, and then shoot him once he had his vision.
Oh, and it amused me to imagine the ending of this video applying to Cage's situation:

IMO, a test of a good movie is that one enjoys it enough not to notice problematics, at least, not on the first few viewings. If one finds oneself picking a movie apart on the first run through, one's probably not immersed enough in order to suspend disbelief.

Agreed that it's a cracking flick.

I thought it was based off of a soap opera that ran in the 70's, so I have been avoiding it.

It was a great movie. I watch it every time it's on. Even if they used the device in the General's office they still would have had to escape from the military.

Why? Reset and he'd still remember, and they'd have back all the time it took to get there.

She would have to have stopped shooting him in the head. So he had to figure out a way to be captured in a condition that required a blood transfusion. Or not ...

I liked it. The tone of movie reminded me of Waterworld. High adventure with a little comedy.
