Favourite Male Vocalists?

Post by Nav »

I thought the Favourite Female Vocalists thread had a logical companion, and here is is!

Eddie Vedder: I think 'explosive' is the word I'd use to describe EV's style, though it doesn't really do him justice.

Jeff Buckley: Seven octave range, I believe.

Matt Bellamy (of Muse): Encountered criticism early in his career for sounding too much like Thom Yorke. I'll risk the wrath of Radiohead fans everywhere by saying he's become the better singer since then. Bellamy puts the 'opera' into rock-opera.

Ian Brown: Terrible singer technically, but his hushed style during the zenith of Baggy became something close to iconic.

Justin Hawkins: A ridiculous singer for a ridiculous band.

Mark Morriss: A sentimental one this, but if you like melodic indie rock accompanied by nasal falsetto, you'll love the Bluetones.

I partial to Bono and Michael Stipe however Jeff Buckley is a great vocalist as well.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. Favorite male vocalist? Easy. Robert Plant.

And then there would be (in no particular order):

David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Lou Reed, anybody in The Beach Boys, all four of The Beatles, Kurt Cobain, Roger Daltrey, Jimi Hendrix, Thom Yorke, Chris Cornell, Gary Brooker, Captain Beefheart, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, and Marvin Gaye.

I think it's funny that most of the great male vocalists were in bands. With females, though, it's usually them on stage alone with nameless backing musicians.

Brad Roberts of Crash Test Dummies. I still haven't figured out if his deliberately deepened, drawling vocals are a way of thumbing his nose at the world, in the same way his satirical lyrics are; but I like to think they are.

Can't believe I forgot Tom Waits.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
