TV purgatory

Post by lorin »

Would someone explain to me why there are certain shows that they rerun over and over and over and others that never ever are shown in rerun.

Northern Exposure
Murphy Brown
China Beach
Mary Tyler Moore Show

I know they are older but there are plenty of older shows that they show. And fyi, they are all owned by Hallmark TV.

MTM was rerun for years. The others....Pretty much mired in their time.

Trademarks, royalties, and other rights associated with the show all tied up in litigation that some just-out-of-college junior intern lawyer looks at every few months when he goes to court for an hour or two.

Most people who want old 80s shows are more interested in the 80s action shows than they are the sit-coms. Sometimes, when I see old episodes the production, acting, dialog, and lighting quality are, well, painful to watch.

Still...China Beach has Dana Delaney and I could watch her all day long.
The Tank is gone and now so am I.

China Beach was one of the most under rated shows of the 80's.

I own Northern Exposure but they fuck with the music on the dvd's you buy. Some legal issue, and if anyone knows N.E. its 50% about the music.

Murphy Brown was also way ahead of its time.

China Beach was a great show, and I'd let Dana Delaney do all sorts of things to me. Repeatedly.

Music rights don't matter with reruns, only with recordings. That's why you can see complete episodes of WKRP on TV, but the DVDs are a disaster.

Why?
The vagaries of contract law from the era. They had no clue there'd be DVDs and streaming services. And the thought of re-selling complete seasons of TV shows wasn't on the radar until much later on.

When the contracts were written it never occurred to anyone that someone would want to purchase recordings of the shows. That really didn't start to be a thing until the 2000s.

Actually, that isn't so anymore. They just released all of it with a high percentage of the original music restored.

I wanna buy it.

Unfortunately, it is so. The new set restores quite a bit of music, but not all of it. The amazingly sublime "Dogs" scene from the Thanksgiving episode isn't there as they failed to license the Pink Floyd song.

Pity. But you can't win 'em all, and while I agree that the initial 1st season set was a bit of a disaster, I wouldn't call what I've seen of this set the same. I wouldn't expect they'd be able to provide it all. The humor is still there, and while the music was a big part of the show (particularly the Hot Blooded scene), I'd rather have the funny than nothing. Although obviously I'd rather have it fully restored. It does seem like they made an effort this time though.

They did make an effort, but you know, something broken.....
