Does death give life meaning?

If we found a way to become immortal then we couldn't have kids... it'd get too crowded.

Foul - What if humans aren't God's children? Then our deaths wouldn't be any more significant than the death of a bug. What if God's children are the dolphins, and their level of sentience and consciousness is much higher than we could ever imagine? We would be to them like the dinosaurs were to us - just another evolutionary roadblock to them returing to their Garden of Eden (dry land).

I mean, if we die and nothing happens, then why would some Godlike being have created a scenario like that in the first place? To be an A-hole? Why would he feed us a few drops of awareness, and then cut off the supply at death? It's like taking an abandoned baby bird, feeding it from one of those droppers, and then just abruptly stopping and walking away to let it die.

But what if God's plan is for the big picture - the universe itself? Humans could be here to bring about certain changes to the universe. Or perhaps no specific changes, but just be an instrument of change. We wouldn't matter as individuals, so why bother giving us an afterlife? God's just waiting for the universe to do something, or just fascinated watching it, hoping it will surprise him.

I don't know, just a thought.

What do you think would happen if humans had a way to keep themselves from dying? Become immortal? How would our every day actions be affected.

Maybe we'd have a lot fewer. Procrastination might run rampant. "Aaaaaaaaaa... Oh forget it, I'll do it tomorrow. No, wait, I'll do it in 300 hundred years. What's the rush?" And we'd be more patient with things. Take the proper time to set things up, because, again, what's the rush?

On a non-every day basis, we might be less creative. Less music, poetry, writing... How much does death looming over us drive us to these things?

A lot of things would gain a new dimension. Life sentence, marriage, chronical illness...a lot more reasons to kill yourself, probably.
