Do you think then there is something to Linden's expostulation that the Bloodguard caused or contributed to Kevin Landwaster's despair? She may not have meant it, or meant it the way she said it, but she did say it and it would appear to have some sort of value.

In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.

He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.

I imagine Kevin did, indeed, find it extremely difficult to feel worthy of the Bloodguard. Of course, that's not the Bloodguards' fault. We all do what we, for whatever reasons, need to do. And I believe we should avoid harming others. But you can't be responsible for how everybody feels about everything you do. If you did, fear would make you immobile. And someone would react badly to that, too.

But the Haruchai are a little more passionate and innocent than most. Or at least they were when they met Kevin. Their needs drove them to the Vow. They couldn't have NOT taken it, even if the thought that others might possibly take it badly had crossed their minds. Which it didn't.
