LOL! actually, FOTR is a bit slow at first. But as they go on and you meet Aragorn and then the rest of the fellowship, they get better...and then in TTT you meet the other characters, Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn, Treebeard, ole Wormy, you start getting better character development. Then later, Denethor, Faramir..etc. And then there is Gollum.

To me, it's the "bible" of Fantasy. Of course, no one has to agree with me on that. But these books are what led me to Covenant and others... I treasure them :)

It's funny because Tolkien flew totally blind when he wrote LOTR. When Tolkien was first writing about Strider, he said something like "Strider was as much a surprise to me as he was to Frodo when he appeared in the Inn at Bree."

Gawd, why do they have to always have these funky names in fantasies, like Theo~ this and Egora~ that. Nobody ever uses names like Bob or Mike.

In The Chronicles, a couple of names of Land people are normal names ... Elena, Trevor, and one of the Manethralls was Fay or Joy or Gay or something.

I reckon that's pretty cool, because in a completely different world, with different languages etc, names are gonna be different, but every now and then there would be a coincidence, surely.

So kudos to SRD for that.
