Thank you. I kind of needed to hear that.
the joy & delight is key.

I come from an interesting place regarding this. I worked for several years as an Administrative Assistant at the University (of Florida) Athletic Association. That's the corporation who hires and pay the athletic team coaches and staff at UF. For the paid staff, such focus and stress is expected, ; it's their jobs, after all.
However, UAA also is responsible for making certain the STUDENT athletes are students first. They try to keep them focused on a degree seeking path. They arrange tutoring for the STUDENT athletes who need it. And, they try to drill in to everyone's heads that they are serving the STUDENT, who happens to be an athlete.
Yes, the STUDENT athletes train hard, so they remain competitive. But, the staff are trained to be on the lookout for the loss of joy in their sport, or burnout in general, for the STUDENT athletes.
When it comes to academic competition, such as Math Team or Brain Bowl, as far as I understand, most of those are both played and coached by volunteers. Sure, it can help build a resume. But the spark of joy and fun in being involved must stay paramount. Otherwise, why do it?
