I actually have a reason for it, too.
Spoiler
When Ben went down in the temple, a smoke monster appeared, and then Alex came and told Ben to do whatever FLocke said.
But when they were on their way to the statue, FLocke didn't know about that incident.
(In fact, it could be that Jacob himself was one of these creatures... but I don't have anything to back that up).
Finally, last night when Ben said, "You're the monster," FLocke's response was, "I'm a who, not a what." Calling him "the monster" would be inappropriate if there are more than one. Or I could be reading too much into that statement

Yes, and also:
Also:
I think the answer is: predestination vs the unwritten future, and/or predestination vs free will. That's not from the show last night, but from watching the season recap.
Anyone else wonder if
Spoiler
If the temple is loyal to Jacob, and there was a smoke monster there, how could it be Loophole? If it could have been Loophole, why are the residents freaking out now?

Frankly, I don't think FLocke would want Ben to know that he knew, that could get Ben's wheels turning and suspecting instead of being ripe to do what FLocke wanted him to do. Also, the temple inhabitants weren't concerned about him until they were told that Jacob was dead. At that point, they decided to put up guards against Loophole (which is one of the main reasons why I think Jacob sent them there to heal Sayid). No, I think there's only one Smokey, and that's FLocke.
As far as Sayid and Jacob... I doubt it, there isn't any indication of bodily possession before (that I can remember) and as Richard and Ben said the previous season, dead is dead, you don't get to come back... it's a slightly colored view, though, as I think that would be lame, the show all ready has the perfect means for Jacob to continue his manipulations...
I think Miles has a power similar to FLocke, except I think Flocke can also read the memories of the living... just a little speculation

When it airs and if the UK network decides to put it online.
I have no idea when season 6 starts over here. I've been downloading the show since they switched networks to one I don't get back at season 3.
Edit: Actually, I just checked, you can only watch the online episodes if you're a subscriber to the network anyway.

Looks like a paid service...
While I wait (16%, speed is up but still 10 hours remaining), back to my rewatch. A few notes:
- Locke's mother appeared in a dream sequence, not as a dead person.
- Ditto Charlie's mother, though we don't even know if she's dead or alive.
- Boone's Shannon hallucination was only a hallucination.
- Yemi died on the island when the plane crashed, or on the plane in flight to the island from his bullet wound, which fits my pattern for these doppelgangers.
Season 2, The 23rd Psalm: Smoke monster appears, shown clearly and unambiguously for the first time. Commentary on this episode confirms it's the same monster from the Pilot and that Locke confronted in Walkabout. We see the flashes of images in the smoke as Eko looks in.
Also, shows the smoke in a calm and quiet state, then later with trees flying up out of the ground, answering my previous question, heh.

Excellent season opener episode! Looks to be a great last season; another WTF is going on season with one big question (or two) answered. However, I am sure it lost some people who were going to give this season a 2nd shot and then gave up due to
Anyway, no guesses yet, but one. I will say what I thought the first time I saw the first episode:
And not a guess, but some observations:
Anyway, recorded and watching a 2nd time tonight to catch the stuff I missed first go-around.
Spoiler
two story arcs that have the same people, but two different time paths with the story going back and forth between each arc; alas, the poor souls who just can't keep up with an excellent story.
Spoiler
there are two smokeys/monsters, most obvious now. Flash back to the first night on the island, at night on the beach, the first time we hear that monster yelling and the trees moving: the people first look one way at the commotion and then there is another same type of commotion in a different direction and they all suddenly look towards that sound. Thinking back on that now, that was probably both Jacob and MIB guy: MIB there to scare them and then Jacob showing up in perhaps the same form, to remind MIB that he, Jacob, is there now so don't try anything with these fresh castaways.
And not a guess, but some observations:
Spoiler
Jacob is "Accended" after all, like I was joking in an earlier post.
And notice how on the plane some things were altered: Jack's response to the flight attendant giving him a free bottle of booze was different. "This of course breaks some sort of code violation" (or words to that effect) in original time line, vs "It will be our secret" in the altered timeline. Also, Boone setting near Locke without Shannon vs Boone and Shannon setting togeather farther up in first class in the orig timeline. Well, and Charlie trying to kill himself...

Anyway, recorded and watching a 2nd time tonight to catch the stuff I missed first go-around.
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

I'm going to spoiler everything past this intro, just in case...at least one thing here could be because I did a "speed through" of everything before last season, and may have missed some subtleties, but :
wife calling, maybe back later.
Spoiler
Probably the "split plots" and differences from the "original" lines are because there is going to be bleeding between the crashed and non-crashed versions of same characters
I thought new sayid might be Jacob, too...but thinking back, there's a line about "problems" cuz pool isn't clear water: this will lead to Jacob having some influence [though perhaps not 'consciously'...some portion of him/his powers is there] and Sayid having a chance to redeem his evil past.
Flocke says to Richard "you looked better in chains" or somesuch...if this is a reference to something previously shown, I missed it [speed throughing]...if it isn't, I think this matters and has lots of mytho-connections...

the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.
