Just because I can, I'm posting the Lyrics to another of my favourites:
CRUCIFY YOUR MIND

Was it a huntsman or a player
That made you pay the cost?
That now assumes relaxed positions
And prostitutes your loss?

Were you tortured by your own thirst
In those pleasures that you seek
That made you Tom the curious
That makes you James the weak?

And you claim you got something going
Something you call unique
But I've seen your self-pity showing
And the tears rolled down your cheeks.

Soon you know I'll leave you
And I'll never look behind
'Cos I was born for the purpose
That crucifies your mind.

So con, convince your mirror
As you've always done before
Giving substance to shadows
Giving substance ever more.

And you assume you got something to offer
Secrets shiny and new
But how much of you is repetition
That you didn't whisper to him too?

I'm a VERY occasional visitor to Vespers, so I'm amazed that I even ventured into this thread.

My South African wife has Cold Fact & After the Fact on CD, so if anyone wants a copy, just PM me with your address and I'll get it off to you as soon as I can.

Must admit, I'm not that keen on it, but then I'm more of a Rock guy myself.

It is available to download on www.shareaza.com (which is ad and spam free. But you'll have to be patient to download it as there are only a couple of sources available.)
Quote - John Smeaton (Terrorists take note)

"This is Glasgow- we'll just set aboot ye"

 That's great Phantasm, thanks for the info and the offer.

(See, us South Africans spread Rodriguez around the globe. ;) )

Ask her if she wants Live Fact, (turns out it's the only one I have on CD, lost my CD of Cold Fact it looks like, only have the tape now), it's the recording of the Johannesburg concert.

Nothing new on it though, but if she wants to add it to her collection, I'll do my best to make an effort to send her a copy. (Have to stick together you know. ;) )

Maybe I'll ask for a copy of After The Fact in return...haven't heard it. :D

It's funny how an artist can be most appreciated in a country other than their own.

Joy is in the ears that hear.

Nice thread Av...

Wow, this thread is old. :D

Well, here's some up to date news...a Swedish documentary film maker discovered the story, and made a movie about it.

Searching For Sugarman.

Watched it on Friday, and it was excellent. Can highly recommend it to all.

I was thinking of pming you, Av, but this thread came up in the search. heh. Never heard of Rodriguez until my friend sent me the dvd the other day. Excellent movie. The music sounded very good from the clips.

I googled, and turns out the movie didn't get it all quite right. His influence in SA may be as shown, but he was also huge in Australia, and toured there extensively in 79 and 81.

Still, where the big money is, where it could have changed his life of hard labor, where he freakin' lived his whole life, the USA, he was unknown.

EDIT: Only now reading your op. Very interesting that you wrote it six years before the movie was made; six years before anybody over here ever heard of him.

EDIT 2: Wiki is great. Dave Matthews was born in Johannesburg. Moved to the US when he was 2, but moved back when he was 10. So he grew up listening to Rodriguez. And they covered Sugar Man on their tour this summer. Crazy.

I'm particularly fond of Crucify Your Mind.

It's amazing that you started this thread six years before the movie came out. Just because. My wife and I watched the movie last night, then again tonight. I read the concert reviews you posted. Just incredible.

Glad you enjoyed it. :D Yeah, the movie totally skipped over the whole Aus thing...didn't quite fit the narrative they were going for I guess, but I did mention it in my original post. :D (Although I don't think I'd call 2 concert tours there extensive.)

It was still damn good though, and it is a hell of a story. Dunno about you, but that record producer guy they interviewed seemed a bit shady to me. :D

I see he's playing the Royal Albert Hall next May. I'm glad it all worked out...certainly think he deserved the recognition.

Yeah, that guy sure acted suspicious, eh? Entirely unlike everybody else in the movie.

I assume royalties on a half million sales in SA are gone for good. But he's making money now. And I guess another album, too.

Be interesting to see a new album for sure. Just thinking about the scenes I enjoyed in the movie...think I have to watch it again myself. :D

Thank you and thank you and thank you again.
including two runs at mayor of Detroit.
I wonder if anyone's thinking what I'm thinking.

But of course you can't know if I don't say what I'm thinking.

Was thinking, "Gee, I wonder if Detroit would be in a way better position right now if he'd won."

Hope I get around to getting the documentary and watching it!
"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
