Using something like that album (I have the Rocky soundtracks - I'm a ST collector) kind of proves my point. Those songs, the pop styles of 20 years past are not 'popular' today. They appeal to a very personal taste and memories or nostalgia. You would find a small cross-section of people that like it and a very large number of people that don't.

Consider that the music 'Rocky' is still remembered for is emphatically not TEOTT, but rather the symphonic suite - ba BA ba ba BA ba ba DA ba ba BA and the music from his training (which is what they used in the recent trailers for the new Rocky Balboa film) rather than a song like TEOTT.

I think each one of you played Morrovind before. I think that that the main soundtrack should be the Morrovind theme!

Actually, there's a song by Pink Floyd called "Sorrow". Whenever I hear it, it makes me think of Kevin and the Ritual of Desecration.

Holy cow, I've been thinking for the longest time about what music goes with these books, and here I jump on a few minutes and find this thread. I thought I was the only one with these types of thoughts. Glad to know my weirdness is not limited to just me.
Symphony X is the first band I thought of for this. Progressive metal band with classical background mixed with very melodic powerful sound. I'd love to hear them do a theme for Foul, kind of in the same vein as the theme for Darth Vader. Oh, yea....

But you'll have to admit that movie makers, do not use these various genres of pop, rock, or whatever as a rule. At best they throw in a few songs to 'jazz up' a track. Big films are usually made with symphonic soundtracks, for the simple reason that those appeal to the broadest cross-section of the audience. This is similar logic as to why they made those stupid changes to the story in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings fims - to appeal to what in their minds is the broadest possible cross-section of public taste (see my above posts).

I sympathize with the desires to have specific songs here and there. Most critics would condemn their use, though, the producers know it, and unless a specific slant to the film is intended, as in Flash Gordon (1980) with music by Queen, they'll likely avoid it.

Put another way, symphonic music is the safest choice for a big budget film. Personally, I am pleased, as I like symphonic and (with no offense intended) would be disgusted with a film that ran the various songs described here, and a lot of people would be. The taste is narrower. If we don't share tastes, how could we both enjoy a particular aspect of such a film?

I hear you, Rus. The taste is also narrowed for readers of adult fantasy. Every person I have told about the TC books, with the exception of one person, has looked at me as if I had two heads and belonged in a zoo. Same way they look at me when I tell them I like progressive metal music. Like I"m weird. I'm not weird. My mind is just more open. I completely agree with you that the GENERAL population won't accept or even like these ideas that we have. These forums aren't for the general population either. And that's why WE come here and they don't. I would go see any TC movie even if it had country music in it , which makes me kick dogs and get drunk. Speaking of Peter the Great (Jackson), LOTR's music was perfect for the films. He could have done something differently, but the mood behind the film would have been entirely different. These are just my humble opinions, and I'm glad to have this forum to unload them in.

but i believe a Good soundtrack that doesnt "date" the movie would make it better, in short the soundtrack makes or kills a decently edited movie.

London Symphony Orchestra Helped the star wars series ALOT. imagine if they had added the Disco sound track to Star wars as they almost did.

It's been a very long time since I did it, but when I first read the Second Trilogy, I was listening to Raiders of the Lost Ark and thought some of the music really fit what.
Not the triumphal Indy themes. They really abandoned it in the later films, but there was a dark, seedy side to Indiana Jones in the first. He was accused of being a grave robber, and there was a serious implication that he had taken advantage of Marion, a "child."
Williams captured a lot of it. The power, the magic in that movie was VERY subtle until the Nazis faces started melting off. And the Williams' soundtrack really underscored it.
Williams could do it. He's certainly matured a lot since then, but I thought he had it pinned down, then.
Stuff like the Map Room played that for me.

I felt the same way. Indeed (I think I mentioned this elsewhere) I see the piece entitled "The Miracle of the Ark" to equally fit the climaxes of both the first and second trilogies - the confrontations with Foul. In the second one, there's a 'falling' motif followed by a 'clink' that perfectly fits the empty ring hitting the dais. I'd say the 'Ark' theme is a pretty good double for the white gold.

Now put Jerry Goldsmith's 'Meld' theme from Star Trek:TMP (Ilia and V'jur) in as an awesome crescendo for either Covenant's destruction of the Illearth Stone or the transformation of the new Staff of Law...

Williams is too old, imo (in his 70's now). He seems to have stopped conducting and just composes now. I think it makes a difference - but it would still likely be good music.

The song's always reminded me of Covenant. Fields of green = Andelain. Yggdrasil = The One Tree. Shades of Mordant.

Rus, I too understand that a symphonic score is the best bet. (My vote is for Hans Zimmer... the man is a symphonic deity!!! ) Personally, I would love to see a film come up with an "alternative soundtrack" option on a special edition DVD (one that could have more "popular" songs on it). It wouldn't be difficult; all they'd have to do is include the songs on a separate audio track on the DVD (much like they do for foreign dubs). It'd be awesome if someone did that.

At any rate, I love playing this game, so here's my submission. Every time I hear "Save Yourself" by Stabbing Westward, I think of Thomas Covenant, particularly in the First Chronicles. The themes of loneliness, damage, and isolation in the song are reminiscent of a lot of things Covenant himself says.

Rusmeister,..I have to agree that a symphony would be a good bet ..look what it did for star wars and Rocky,

however the song Paint it Black by the Stones, as Covenant is breaking down and destroying his house would fit...as Gothic Gypsy said with her idea on alternate soundtracks..im surprised someone hasnt done that for movies that were good with dated soundtracks on them.. i dont know how many times ive been watching a movie and thought a certain song would be perfect for this scene....to take your idea a step further GG mabey thats next with flashdrive movies you can edit the soundtrack to your personal specifications. add song here etc.
