I'm gonna try and see it this weekend. It's been too long since I've been out to a movie. I just don't like going by myself.

The movie was just OK, not great. I kept asking questions like "How the hell does he have electricity and running water?"

NYC has water gravity fed from the Catskills, and there's a scene in the film showing Will's array of generators.

i wish they had stopped at the scene where Will is screaming at the mannequin. and then gone back to the begining and made the film that ended logically at that point. Will did a great job showcasing loneliness. they could have jettsoned the entire vampire plot.

I agree that the strength of the film is Smith's performance. But disagree with the vampire thing ... mainly because they were not vampires.... ;)

They were vampires in the book.

Rented the Omega Man over the weekend for a comparison. There are of course similar themes but one thing in particular seemed to help matters with IAL. In Omega Man the mutant survivors are of course light sensitive however their only other odd trait seems to be fanatical fundamentalism. They didn't seem overtly irrational they seemed more like a religious cult and nothing more. I prefer the mutants as they were presented in the newer film.
One thing I will say about Heston's Nevel is that because his antagonists are intelligent, conversive people the character gets the opportunity to throw out some memorable one-liners. :-)

I missed that scene, and never knew that about NYC.

I won't deny this film had good acting; but I found it on the whole rather dull. For lone acting roles I much preferred Tom Hanks in Cast Away. This plot moved around too much; and just didn't do anything for me.

When I first heard that the wise-cracking Will Smith was cast as the main role in this movie, I was outraged and disgusted...the fact is though, his performance was pretty damn fantastic IMO.

I enjoyed this movie a Hell of lot more than I thought, so much so, that I bought the special edition DVD with the alternative ending.

Oh and the guy asking about the Vincent Price version (last man on Earth). It's an ok movie....ok enough for me to add to my "post apocalypse/zombie" DVD collection anyways.

Here's a few pix of the Ashokan Reservoir. Which, I believe, is the largest reservoir feeding NYC. At least a half dozen towns were submerged when they build the damn to make it back in, iirc, the 1950's.

Either the links are not working, or I can't view these pix from the really stupid computer I'm on right now. I'll fix it later if it needs fixing.

I liked the movie up until when the girl arrives. I forgot that there was an alternate ending, and we just mailed it back today! Damnit. What's the alternate ending?
