if you perceive the extended leg going from right to left in the background, you see it as clockwise, and if you perceive it in the foreground you have counter. mind wobbling!

I've found that every time I look away and then back again, she reverses direction.

She goes anti-clockwise for me. But to spoil the party for everyone, I don't think that is a valid test for right or left hemisphere 'domination'. Functions many believe that are localised to particular hemispheres are often spread out across both hemispheres.

I wish I had a portable FMRI for whenever questions like this arise in real life.Loremaster wrote:She goes anti-clockwise for me. Indeed. In fact, the purpose of this test originally was not to show dominance but to demonstrate hemisphere switching. I'm not sure why, but there's apparently a correlation between the way you perceive the rotation and which hemisphere is most active at the time of viewing. Most people see the figure switch when they begin reading the text beside it, for example.Loremaster wrote:She goes anti-clockwise for me. Well said. I think the test, if anything, reveals that the frontal lobe plays a part in switching attention (or inhibiting elements of attention).Murrin wrote:Indeed. Ahhh. That makes sense. Both times I've seen this (first time was a few days ago on break.com), it was going clockwise at first, and then it switched to counterclockwise and stayed that way.Murrin wrote:Indeed. "It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Hey I finally got it--I've been able for a while to get it to switch by concentrating for several seconds on the legs, but now I've actually got it to switch immediately whenever I want. And I don't even "feel" it switch any more--it's much smoother.
