I would hesitate to undo any of my decisions, since even the bad ones gave me experience and helped shape my life as it is today. But. . .I would not have run up credit card debt over the previous two years. It makes my life difficult in ways I had not anticipated, and has stopped me from attending at least one Elohimfest. :(

If I had it all to do again, I would not have picked Beta, but gone with VHS. Aaargh. It wasn't my fault! Dad bought a Beta VCR, and so that's what we used. Unfortunately, the legacy of that decision is that now I have a bunch of Beta tapes without a machine to play them on (our first and only Beta unit died sometime in the mid-80's, replaced by, of course, a VHS machine.) One of those Beta tapes happens to contain a recording I made of a televised '83 Police Synchronicity concert from Montreal that I'd dearly like to watch again. Double Aarrgh. Sucks to be stuck with a dead format.

That sucks, MM. Have you tried looking on EBAY for a player? Or even better. . . a bootleg copy of the concert on another format? Or you could just take your Beta tapes and have them copied to DVD professionally. Just a thought. . .

Having it copied professionally would be best, I suppose. Just apprehensive about how much it would cost. One of these days I'll phone around.

I've never browsed Ebay. Got burned once by an online purchase years ago (it was a major purchase). Have no intention of getting burned again.

If I had to do it all again, I would not do a damn thing differently.

I came by my regrets honestly.

I would listen more and say less
I would do better in high school
I would stop rationalizing my failures

I would not have allowed my mother to talk me out of accepting the offered position at the US Naval Academy.

If I had It All To Do Again I Would Not...be the same person, as we are shaped by our choices. If I changed some of the major ones, I probably would have turned out differently. Such as, I would have picked different glasses during my Jr. High years; would have let the Spanish exchange student I lived next to in high school know how I felt about her; had the courage to carry through with my first breakup with who later became my wife, then ex-wife; sowed my wild oats more than I did instead of trying to be such a "moral" person; never taken up smoking; tried harder to remain in music instead of focusing on getting a paycheck; was smarter with money after my divorce or at least claimed bankrupcy earlier in life; a marillion other things. Oh, make that a million. How much is a marillion anyway?

Yeah, I'm reluctant to say I'd change anything, since I am, like everyone, a product of my experiences (that is, each person is a product of their own experiences, not mine :P ). Still, that rational stance doesn't stop me feeling regret sometimes. Emotions aren't rational. I regret not telling the first girl I loved that I...did. Knowing what I know now, it's obvious that she felt it too, but I was too young and naive to know that then. But if I changed that, my life would be different for years, and I wouldn't be me. Even the smallest changes can have huge repercussions. I could regret having a really boring non-job in Social Services, but that's what started me writing fiction. I could regret dating a contemptuous bitch, but she taught me what I can and can't (and should/shouldn't) tolerate.

Anyway...there is one thing I would change if I could, but it's private. I caused pain to someone who needed my protection. That, I would change.

Thanksgiving - Poi Dog Pondering

Somehow I find myself far out of line from the ones I had drawn
Wasn't the best of paths, you could attest to that,
but I'm keeping on.

Would our paths cross if every great loss had turned out a gain?
Would our paths cross if the pain it had cost us was paid in vain?

There was no pot of gold, hardly a rainbow
lighting my way
But I will be true to the red, black and blues
that colored those days.
I owe my soul to each fork in the road,
each misleading sign.
'Cause even in solitude, no bitter attitude
can dissolve my sweetest find

Thanksgiving for every wrong move
That made it right.

Y'know, if work didn't give me one, I wouldn't have one. The answer to it all is to get one (preferably free from work like I do) and never give out your number to anyone except your very closest friends. And maybe not even then.

Now I just need to work on the "happy" thing.

You know, I find relecting on past errors is a recipe for moping, but it's started me thinking about things I wouldn't do differently. Much more comforting, I have to say. Results in a lot of "I'm glad I..." moments. :) In fact, maybe I should start a counter thread...

Here's the answer to all your troubles!
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.
