A beautiful and surprising film from (of all people) Clint Eastwood, who directed, produced, and starred in.
A cantankerous old [expletive deleted], recently widowed, feels an alien in the neighborhood he's lived in since the 50's but which is now mostly populated by Hmong people. Asian gang bangers begin to harass the kid next door and he chases them away with his shotgun. A hero to the Hmongs, they shower him with gifts and attempt to befriend him. He starts to give in and builds a relationship with the young man the gang has been trying to initiate, teaching him to use tools and curse like a sailor, and finding him a job. He is also dying from lung cancer, a fact he hides from everyone.
But the gang has not forgotten him and confrontation is inevitable. When it comes, Eastwood surpasses himself and the ending is redemptive without sentimentality.
My husband liked this film too.

That's saying a lot.
