The Police are post-punk, actually, if we want to play this label game. Since they are my favorite band of all time, I'm naturally defensive about setting the record straight.

But I am very glad to see that a veteran of The Watch appreciates The Police! Cheers to amanibhavam! :)
The Police were bloody brilliant!!!!

I'm not gonna make any statement on the quality of the Police, but they were NOT punk in any sense whatsoever, and post-punk only in the sense that their career got going after 1977. :P

While I obviously love the Ramones and the Pistols, I'll try and mention a few favorites that haven't gotten mentioned in this thread yet...

Rock: Johnny Thunders (particularly with the Heartbreakers, but the New York Dolls were cool as well), Bob Dylan, the MC5/Wayne Kramer, the Who
Punk: The Dead Boys (plus all the other 70's punk bands already mentioned), Rancid
Metal: Motörhead (or is that Rock?)

Why, pray tell, can the Police not be considered punk in any way whatsoever?

As I said before, they had a dab almost-punk sensibility in them, but they weren't punk.

In what sense could they be considered punk? They had short hair, and they started out on an indepentent label (though that wasn't such a big issue back then)... otherwise, I'm stumped.

But I've been wrong before, so please enlighten me. ;)

Sure they could. Just like I said, everything after 1977 could. It's a pretty meaningless term. :P

Yes, long before I was walking. Good to know Daniels spans more than just country. Oh, was wondering: do you like the Allman Brothers?
