Sweet! I've read Dune, albeit a million years ago. The rest I don't think I've ever read. This bodes very well.

I might start with Pillars of the Earth first. I've seen it on Netflix, and was intrigued.

I'm also going to be blogging my reading endeavors. Stay tuned.

Oh, and I had picked up Winterbirth by Brian Ruckley a few months back. Never got around to reading it. Has anyone read it? If so, is it any good?

I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan. It's not elegant and it's not pretty; it's vulgar, crass and brazen. It is quite fun though, and clever in places.

Almost all of my book purchases in the last couple of years have been academic (and some of the non-academic stuff I've read has been rubbish, like Dune) so I'm short of recommendation material.

Sounds like yours truly. ;)

Whee! Thanks for all the recommendations everyone! I shall start compiling my list and head off to the library and/or used book store.

It's on Fist's list but you MUST MUST MUST read "Gates of Fire" by Stephen Pressfield. It's a historical fantasy about the Spartan defense of Thermopylae. I will buy you a new copy and mail it to you if you want to read it. It's that good. Check out the thread on it on this forum. Not one person I have recommended this book to has had anything less than rave reviews.

P.S. I read Winterbirth and it was not very good.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. Historical fiction, rather than historical fantasy. heh. 300 would be historical fantasy. The movie, anyway. The comic wasn't like that, iirc.

Well, I didn't []love[/i] it, but I didn't hate it by any means. Just didn't like the dialogue. Think it's time for a reread actually.

Depends. Right now, I'm averaging two books a month. Plus science fiction short stories... I loves me some quality science fiction short stories

I read Winterbirth awhile back. I liked it well enough to pick up the rest of the series. It was okay, but not a keeper.

(Not quite halfway through TCG. I have to keep putting it down -- it's kind of intense...)

For something completely different.... The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, for something unapologetically droll and irrelevant. (By Alexander McCollum)

I've read a few of those and liked them. You may have a better appreciation for them than I did, tho. ;)

A friend has Pillars of the Earth, so I will be starting there. I'll also be watching the series concurrently because I don't care about spoilers.

No, really. I don't.
