TIW, Ch. 14 Only Those Who Hate

"It is the voice of a Forestal." Triock spoke simply, but every angle of his inflection expressed execration. He jumped erect and balanced himself as if he meant to give chase when Covenant began to run. "Garroting Deep has sent Caer-Caveral to Morinmoss. But he cannot claim you. I can" -- his voice shook -- "I cannot permit it."
"Claim? Permit?" The peril gripping Covenant's heart tightened until he gasped. Something in him that he could not remember urged him to trust the gleams. "You drugged me!"
"So that you would not escape!" White, rigid fear clenched Triock, and he stammered through drawn lips, "He urges you to destroy me. He cannot reach far from Morinmoss, but he urges-the white gold -- ! Ah!" Abruptly, his voice sharpened into a shriek. "Do not toy with me! I cannot -- ! Destroy me and have done! I cannot endure it!"

OOOOOOOHHHHHH yes!! I remember the first time I read TIW. I sat there in stunned amazement when I was introduced to Caerroil Wildwood. The concept of a being composed of solid music... Extraordinary. SRD created some phenomenal beings - Sandgorgons, Amok, Elohim, <I>Haruchai</I> - and the Forestals hold their own with them all.

Why didn't Caer-Caveral go to Garroting Deep instead of Andelain? Was there a reason? 'Cause I don't remember..

All it said was that Caer-Caveral was driven to Andelain by the erosion of Morinmoss. The pure earthpower was probably stronger there. Not so strong as Glimmermere perhaps since Andelain began to weaken as soon as Caer-Caveral was killed, but strong enough where he could "hold the glaive of law against the earth".

Unaided, Andelain was stronger than Garroting Deep. Garroting Deep was strong because of Caerroil Wildwood, but Andelain was the heart of the Land without a Forestal. Caer-Caveral chose to add his might to the place that would be able to put it to best use. He knew he couldn't protect more than one spot, and Andelain and he would last longer than GD and he.

this is so...

i remember reading the wounded land 4 the 1st time... when T met CC in andelain, i was stunned when he spoke of the fall of the colossus, and "there is no more Morinmoss"... i sat gaping 4 about 10 minutes...

the thing that crosses my mind most tho, is what would have happened if caerroil wildwood were still alove when CC fled to andelain? would hehave stayed in GD or have gone with CC to andelain?

Caerroil Wildwood was gone before the Sunbane started. In TWL, during the soothtell, TC learned that:

All the old forests-Grimmerdhore, Morinmoss, Garroting Deep, Giant Woods-had thrived to such an extent that Caerroil Wildwood, the Forestal of Garroting Deep, had believed that his labor ended at last, and had passed away; and even the darkest trees had lost much of their enmity for the people of the Land.[/i]

Probably would have had to join CC in Andelain. Maybe if all the forests had a Forestal they could have maintained the forests.

Come to think of it though, why didn't Caerroil Wildwood find more Forestals for the other woods?

I think that becoming a Forestal is a very involved process...
it's akin to selling your soul. How much of Hile Troy remained
in Caer-Caveril? We'll never know really know, but I don't
think Troy was in charge of the power ... I can't see Troy not
using his power to preserve the Lords and the people of the
Land if he had a choice.

but at this point, the lord were corrupt, perhaps earlier he did... but then they were corrupted the stopped?

but i would expect that he had his hands full with andelain and the sunbane.

Forestal,

I was thinking about the time of The Power That Preserves, but even
in the Wounded Land couldn't he have helped those who went to
Andelain? Perhaps told them what was going on?

What a nice discussion you guys have made out of my little rambling... thanks.
I definitely think that it was a Forestal (most likely Caer Caveral aka Hile Troy) who had lead Covenant into Morinmoss and coerced the Healer into his healing, and finally prevented her from killing him.

i dont think so.... i think CC was still in garotting deep... i think it was the consiousness of the forest itself.

I think CC was in Morinmoss, just that he was little better than an apprentice at being a Forestal at the time.

but the Raver specifically says that it is a voice of a forestal that Covenant hears; and I am sure a Raver would know, being a long-time enemy of the Forest and all Forestals

I always considered the "Orm" name in Earthsea more like a title. (The norwegian word "orm" means worm or snake.)

Could "Caer" be a title as well? Does Caer actually mean anything?
