BLASPHEEMER!
How can you say that after redaing
Gildenfire, after what Hyrim accomplished at Seareach, in spite of his lack of physical prowess. Ah me!

I have to agree with Variol Son about Hyrim. Sure he was a bit overweight, and seemed to be more inclined about his next meal than doing his work, but on the mission to Seareach he proved himself. Not many of the Lords could have stood up to that Giant-Raver the way he did.

I'll say Liand... he seems pretty one-dimensional to me. Maybe in the next book or two he will flesh out, but for now I feel he is more one-dimensional than Sheriff Lytton is.

Thanks JD.
As for Liand, I guess I agree, the fact is that I barely noticed him the whole book. Other things were just more important. I guess that makes him one dimensional.

If you mean least favourite character in terms of personality and behaviour, it has to be Linden - even Foul doesn't just whimper and whine.
But it's a different matter if you mean least favourite character in terms of being badly written or poorly conceived. At various points, I've detested Covenant, Troy, Stave, the Ravers, Foul, Triock, Trell, Pietten, Chant, Sunder... Most of the characters, really. But they were all (or mostly) good characters. So the character who is just most badly done (or perhaps least well done) would have to be Liand.

"least favourite character" to me means........
I'm not sure!
I definately didn't mean "poorly written".
I think what I meant, after your post made me reflect on it more, was poor *concept*.
To me the Worm is a horrible concept.
It changed my whole childlike story view.
Hamako is uninteresting to me.
On my re-reads I find myself skimming the parts where he appears.
Liand and Hamako are written well, imo, but I just don't like them.

Ok then. I'll overlook Linden, since she's just too obvious; the one who really niggled at me for some reason was Sunder.

The Worm is pretty bleh. I tend to take it as a mythical representation of the Earthpower, and not much more than that. Only way to keep my sanity.
Liand, on hold. I'm still waiting to see what becomes of him.
The *croyel* seem -- inauthentic. Don't really fit into the mythology of the Land as we've seen it established. Don't really *do* very much. Toss 'em and come with another explanation for the Kemper's power (not hard) and the uniting of the arguleh (maybe a bit harder), and what really changes in the course of the books?
As far as Lytton goes, Lytton is probably a whole lot like Castellan Lebbiwick in _Mordants' Need_; it's just that we haven't had to see any more of him than necessary for the plot.
I am sort of looking forward to having Book II be about him and Sandy in the Northron Climbs or something....

I like things like the croyel, it gives you kind of the impression that you don't know everything about the land and its inhabitants... I really liked hyrim too.
Liand I don't like so far. I don't trust him.

I hate to say it, but Pitchwife always bugged me. Oh, not his personality and such, but because he seemed to like Linden more than TC. TC was the damn hero of the story, Linden only did what she had to do at the end (yeah, I know, I'm oversimplifying her).

I always read it as Pitchwife saw that Linden was more in need understanding-wise, among other things.
TC was sufficient.
Pitchwife saw that.
Plus Pitchwife was a ladies man!

I actually really liked hyrim, definately someone who youd want to be a lord
people i hated though:
Roger - for soem reason, whenever i think of him in the story, i get really irritated, its like he doesent fit
Jeremiah - again, it seems like he doesent fit, and is just an annoying charechor for me
Esmer - hes interesting, but i want to punch him and tell him to stop being such a dick
the merewives - never liked this idea much
and theres a few more i cant think of

Agreed, but I felt that way about Covenant until the middle of The Power That Preserves

The Ramen seem to have this thing for taking in punchable dicks and putting up with destructive crap from them. In a way, Esmer is anohter Pietten, but on a much bigger scale.
Lord Foul himself would be a hero to the Ramen if he were sufficiently gaga over Ranyhyn.

Very well said, VF.

The Ramen often show a lack of discernment in the face of obvious treachery.
This "least favorite" character question has me in a bit of a trap. On one hand, my interpretation of "Least favorite" often coincides with "should be left out of the tale." However, whether a character is liked or not, I can't think of any that SRD introduced that could have been omitted from the story.
On the other hand, simply interpreting "least favorite" as "I don't like you! What is wrong with you?" I would have to answer with Rant Absolain. He was a blind fool who did not arouse an iota of compassion in me. He was a mere puppet whose strings were pulled by Kasreyn, and he lacked honor and integrity in never once attempting to wrest control from his puppeteer. I wanted to head on over to Bhrathairealm and bitch-slap him upside the head.
But I did notice a pattern in the
Chronicles. Save the Giants and
Haruchai--(which in reality could be considered of the Land if not in birth), no entity originating in the Arch and from outside the Land had any kind of honor in my eyes.
Landers were basically alone in their attempts to save the Earth.
