Too often the "happily ever after" ending is a boringly predictable way of doing things.

It was the fact that it didn't happen, when I suspected it would, that made the 2nd Chrons have such an impact on me.
Well said. SRD managed to give us a hard-earned victory that was simultaneously triumphant and sorrowful - our beloved hero won, but it was incredibly costly. SRD managed to combine Happy Ending and Tragic Ending.

Exactly. And combine them excellently at that. I so clearly remember my shock at his death, and I'd probably call it one of the most lasting "literary" impacts I've ever experienced. Especially when I think of the effort I went to to get hold of all the books, his death at the end was doubly effective. :)

Actually, I think the way it'll end is that Covenant will be put on trial for destroying the Arch of Time, and the Creator, the sur-jeherrin, Pietten, and other characters will stop by and remind us of the Chronicles' wackiest moments.

Good morning, Worm, You Honour,
The crowd will plainly show
the prisoner who now stands before you
was caught red-handed showing feelings
showing feelings of an almost human nature!
This will not do...
