Murrin wrote:While this topic's on the top: During the hols I've been watching Stargate Atlantis and SG-1 season 9. The last few seasons of Stargate SG-1 are just brilliant, some of the best stuff I've seen in a while. The way they tie everything in, every episode wraps into the main storyline somehow and even the more episodic ones there are things that come back later in the important ones. The first few series just can't compare to 8 and 9 (and, I hope, 10).
Atlantis looks promising so far (I've seen half of season 1).
It's funny, I think Stargate is about the same as it always was, and hasn't missed a beat with Ben Browder, rather than RDA, and I've heard alot of people who just think it lacks the lustre without RDA, and now, Murrin (And I have heard others say so as well) says the Ben Browder years are the best. Funny how we get so attached to characters, arcs, and enemies.
Anyone know when the last half season of SG-1 and the second half of the Atlantis season return to American SciFi channel? I think I heard March, but, not positive.

I think I heard March as well. I know the SGA season 2 DVD comes out in March. (yey!)
I don't have cable, so I've stayed caught up by reading transcripts... and *hugs* to Canadian tv for showing more of season 3 of Atlantis so I can read those eps, too, 'cause I have a Rodney McKay obsession and it needs feeding!
And damn that sale to hell. I just bought the whole series from Amazon last month, and not for $19.99 apiece, either. More like $25-$28 apiece. *sigh* Oh Well.

I said the last few seasons--including 8 and maybe 7--not just 9 and 10. That's before and after the cast change--I think the new stuff is just as good as the series preceding the changes, except maybe they've gotten more adept by series 9 at the execution of the main storylines.
Though I still think series 7 onwards is far better than series 1-4, for example.
Alynna--how's your internet connection? I've been watching the eps online. The picture quality's not great, but when you can't see it on TV or get the DVDs yet...

Just be glad you've only recently gotten them. They originally were released at far higher than that ($70+ I believe)

I have DSL... may or may not be fast enough.
Yeah, I know they were way more expensive originally - still sell at around $40-$50 at retail stores - so I'm not all that bitter. Just lousy timing, is all. Could have used that extra hundred to pay Busby's board...
Still prefer the first five seasons of SG1 to everything else. It's what I like to call Classic SG1... the chemistry changed after season 5, and just never got back to what it was.

Any season with Daniel Jackson is a great season!

Having said that, I did start to enjoy Jonas' character once I knew that Daniel would be returning.
Alynna, you hvae your McKay obsession, and I have a Dr. Jackson obsession.
Seriously, though, I think that I've liked different things about the series as it has grown and changed. I'm glad that it has changed though, as the same bad guys, good guys and such led to limited possibilities. I was totally nail-biting to see how SG1 would defeat the replicators for good. And now I I'm equally anxious to see how the Ori battles play out. It's the subtle changes that keep things new and interesting, and ultimately are what keep me tuning in.

This week, I watched season 10. Disappointed that there will be no more. The final episode, Unending, was good; can't say I'm as happy about the Ori storyline, though. Rather than any big conclusion wrapping up everything, it ended as if it was just another series, with more to come. Yeah, I'll probably watch the Ark of Truth and Continuum, when they're done, but I'm not sure that the two-hour movie format would really do the storylines justice.
I understand they've only just started showing the second half of s10 in the US. Seems a little odd, since the final episode was broadcast in the UK on easter monday.

Really? You guys got the second set of 10 or 11 episodes already for S10? (Total of 20 or 22 eps in S10?)
The 2 movies, are apparently going to continue as a trilogy from the original movie, and ignore the series entirely.

No, they follow the series. Plot details have already been released--
Stargate: The Ark of Truth wraps up the Ori storyline, and
Stargate: Continuum is about another plot of Baal.
And yeah, they played series 10 all the way through. Taking mid-season breaks is an american thing.

Gosh, cool. I hadn't heard that yet, thanks

Apparently plans are now in the works for a third Stargate television series, called Stargate Universe, that will be more of a stand-alone series than Atlantis was.

And this is just about where my association with Stargate will end. I love
Atlantis but it's no
SG-1 and doesn't look like it ever will be, especially in terms of writing. I shudder to think what they'll try to pass off as a show in this third series. This franchise is becoming the new
Star Trek, in a bad way...

Captain Kirk!

He's funny, but he can be such a judgemental SOB that I actually get angry at him sometimes. He needs to stop picking on Rodney! (and start thinking about picking
up Rodney

)
Also very much a Teyla fan. Very much. Veryvery. Much.
Excited. Last season of SG1 comes out on DVD July 24, and SGA season three is rumored to be out in the US on September 18. Yey!

Heheh...maybe Rodney should stop being such an arrogant twat sometimes!

*huggles Shep*

I've just ordered series one and two on DVD here in Oz...(we're SO far behind - we only just finished series 2 here on free-2-air..

)

I don't know if I'll ever get the SG1 seasons on DVD. Ten years down the line and season 1 is still priced at £45 at the cheapest I could find. And it's the more recent seasons I would want (which are more like £70).

And I thought we had to pay top dollar here in Oz...(they retail the SGA boxed set at $84 AUD per season - but I ordered mine through my video shop at $59.95 per season! a bargain by comparison...)
woeful how they wanna fleece us poor fans!

Atlantis doesn't seem to have the same problem--those ones come out at £60 and drop to £30 after only a few months. I guess because they're not quite as popular.

Not sure why some series felt they could charge $100-$120 (US) a season (Buffy, Treks). I like getting the box sets, but, I can't see paying much over $50-$60 (US) for any series for a season. I'm hoping that trend has started to go away.

it does in Oz. The SG-1 boxed sets are going for half the price of the SGA ones.
$100 US? shoot, that'd make em nearly 130 Aussie dollars...NO WAY would I pay that for a boxed set, even if they'd guaranteed Shep goes nekky in the outtakes...
hang on...

well, ONLY if he went nekky!
