Actually, Syl is right, Dolphins are the only mammals other than humans that have sex for fun. All others come into "season".
Bonobos have sex for conflict-resolution, and, IIRC, something about the social hierarchy.
Actually, I only mentioned it because a number of countries have just signed the Kinshasa Declaration, pledging protection for Central Africa's great apes, including the Bonobo, (who've had a forest reserve set aside for them in the DRC.) The numbers of the Bonobo have dropped from 100,000 to about 10,000 in the last 20 years or so.
They're also the primates who share the greatest percentage of DNA with humans: Their genetic structure differs from ours by only 1.6%.
For anyone who's interested:
Bonobos share 98.4% of our DNA, Gorillas 97.7% Orangutans 96.4% and Chimpanzees 96%.
Kinshasa Declaration
(You weren't
wrong at all Prebe. It's just that they don't do it for "fun".)

Intersting about the bonobo being more similar that Chimpanszee. Are you sure about the figures?
According to presently accepted phylogeny humans closest living relation is the chimp. But then again, I always thought that the bonnobo was a chimp.
I'm not a zoologist (I'm sure you have found out by now

)

The Bonobo
is a chimp. A sub-species of the genus.
Figures are the ones that appear in the article, which is all the credibility I can legitimately give them.

Thanks Av. I'm sure the figures are correct. You can get quite a variation in genetic similarity measurements, depending on what genes you look at. There is some divergence of the methods used, that might easily account for 1-2 % differences.
Typically, you will find larger differences in genes without much adaptive significance.

Monkey Orgy would be a great name for a band.
Last Chimp Standing would be their first album.
Poo Flinging would be their first single.

I still like "Punching the clown." I'm beginning to wonder, though, why all of our conversations seem to bend into this topic after awhile.
(I'm still waiting for the opportunity to use "Clown Punching" in a sentence in everyday life, though.)

It's simple...
"Hey man, leaving early today?"
"Yeah, got some stuff to do."
"Really, what'cha got?
"Well, I figure I'll run home, if the wife's not there, punch my clown, then cut the grass."
"Excellent!"

I prefer the phrase Saluting the Major General.

Actually, it's quite common in all primates. And they don't have the associated taboo's so they do it anywhere.
