Entertainment out of control?

Then these women should be made aware that every woman has the tools to become her best self, and that any man worth a good goddamn is far more attracted to a woman being her best, most ideal self than any (in every sense) two-dimensional "ideal" thrust upon us by ad-man.

This could also be selling to men Plissken: Use the product - get laid.Plissken wrote:Every ad for men's razors (and hair coloring and... ) include at least one shot of a woman reacting with pleasure to the man's use of the product.
As for the T & A, see my new motto. (I'm sure The classically educated Esmer will correct any mistake. He did after all win my latin motto contest)

Interesting topic indeed, and some good points raised. I agree with Plissken that it's merely a modern reflection of the old Circus Maximus type of thing, as is most "reality" TV.
Prefer British TV myself on the whole, we get a fair sampling of both over here.
But yeah, desensitisation is a fairly common thing now-a-days, only spread by the proliferation of television and the internet, but not helped by the news either, at least in terms of things like violence.
Can't help noticing that here at least, news footage seems to have become more graphic. Not sure if it's for shock-value though, or some other explanation.

Plissken is spot on.
That being said, I know I don't buy things for their image. My clothes and hairstyle are anything but fashionable. I don't wear cologne, I'm not interested in clothing labels, I drive a beat up pickup truck. If I've got a fancy clothing label it's because that particular item is comfortable, not because it's cool.
Now having said that, there's a ton of fashion slaves out there, who can't wait to get the new style.
But as far as entertainment? Part of the problem (I think) is that there's fewer and fewer limits to what is acceptable. There are very few parents who want their daughters being sexually active, but those same parents will allow their pre-teen daughters to wear revealing clothes, shorts with things like "sexy" printed on their butts, and makeup.
There's a place for shame in society. People should feel bad about bad grades in school. Kids should exercise more restraint sexually. But unfortunately the "if it feels good, do it" mentality of the 60s has poisoned American society.
Now, I'm not suggesting that we become a nation of prudes, but is it so wrong to let kids be kids?

Precisely. If I were seeking a woman at this point in my life, she'd be very different than the ideal woman I pictured at 20.Plissken wrote:Hey, I'm attracted to the superficial as well - for a bit. (Men never quit entirely being boys, after all.)

Eye candy's all well and good, but it only goes so far.

Personally, I think that the fact that we're re-learning this is the reason marriages that occur later in life have a better chance of success.

It's a matter of shifting priorities. Sure the prom queen looked good and was a tiger in the back of the 'ol Chevy, but she was a ditz with no ambition and lousy coping skills.

Dennis, yeah, I was talking about blood and corpses really, when I said "graphic."
Cail, although I get what you're saying, I'm not sure that the driving cause has to be shame. Unfortunately, I can't think of a word to describe what I mean, but it's something along the lines of a knowledge that you should be doing better/trying harder/whatever.
I certainly agree about the responsibility of parent though, in terms of permitting/encouraging certain behaviours, apparently without thought.

Sorry Ezz. Nathan's disappeared
I knew there was something wrong. My Latin was right my English was hilarious! (stake knife! Jeez!).
Very funny Nathan! Keep poking fun at the foreigner.
I should know how to spell it though, since one of the most common phonetic errors among Danes is pronouncing steak as “steek”.
