As far as household pets - cats. Dogs are too needy and too much work. Also heavy and difficult to pick up and cuddle at random moments.
Dogs are good if they have a cat-like attitude. Or live outside. Or both.
Birds that don't eat meat don't seem to like me. Maybe it's a phobia I have... got my fingers torn up by a bird I pet-sat once. Dunno, they just haven't responded to me well in the past. The hawks and falcons, on the other hand (or fist, rather)...
Above all, though, are horses. Hands down. I could live without cats - a sad life, but possible - but I would go spare without at least one horse in my life. My obsession with horses started before I could walk, and I'm convinced it's genetic. I think we have some Mongol blood in us.
Except we don't eat our ponies...

heh.
The difference between dogs and cats?
My dog worships me as a goddess and has voluntarily taken on the role of protector and worshipper. It is endearing, but can be somewhat annoying on occasion.
My three orange feline furballs consider me to be their slave. When I serve them well, they reward me by curling up next to me or on top of me for a nap, and purr loudly.

I bailed on a roommate(lease and all) in Cali because of his dam ferrets!Syl wrote:Dogs, but ferrets are a close second.

he let them run loose (2 of them), and they peed and pooped along every wall and behind every thing that was in front of a wall, in other words, everywhere. The house had such a stench, no air conditioning, and on a hot day? you could smell the place from the friggin driveway. beyond that, I love them, heh.

oh yeah, when I left, I moved into a weekly motel down the street from Disney Land, and ended up addicted to crack for a year, so I blame them for that too. Happiest Place on Earth? don't take a walk around the outside!

Voted for cats. They're leading the poll!
Never had a pet, but methinks a cat would be cool to have around. Some days I really do wish for one. Too bad my place doesn't allow pets. (I've yet to find one that does.)
Dogs are fine animals, no questioning that. But I simply cannot deal with the sound of barking. I cannot think in the presence of barking. A barking dog grates on my nerves as few other things can. (In that respect, the NO PETS policy is a good thing for me. Maybe I can't have a cat, but I'll still have my sanity, peace and quiet.)

!

I voted dogs, but if it were possible, I'd rather have a tiger or a dolphin as a pet (appropriate real estate and ocean accessibility being the main factors!)
