Apparently his books are totally autobiographical, allowing I suppose for some literary license. He really did run the veterinary practice he describes.

I first read his books 30 years ago, and I can honestly say they helped inspire in me my love of reading. I never saw the TV series... doesn't sound like I missed much!

Just finished reading a biography of playwright Joe Orton, 'Prick Up Your Ears', by John Lahr.

Now I'm going to re-read me some Herriot... :)

I really enjoy Herriot's writing as well, I've got most of his books. One of the few authors who can make me laugh out loud. :)

Anybody know that Douglas Adams, he of Hitchhiker's fame, wrote non-fiction as well?

Just about to start Last Chance to See, a book he wrote in collaboration with Zoologist Mark Carwardine, about species on the verge of exitinction.

Published in 1990, it's apparently out of print now.

Seem to remember something about that, Avatar, but I never read it.

I'm reading Joseph Finder's COMPANY MAN. Tailor-made for people who love suspense thrillers.

Last Chance To See was absolutely brilliant. Same dry humour comes through. Really excellent.

It just gets better.
Here, to digress for a moment, is a little known fact: one of the more dangerous animals in Africa is, surprisingly enough, the ostrich. Deaths due to ostriches do not excite the public imagination very much because they are essentially so undignified. Ostriches do not bite because they have no teeth. They don't tear you to pieces because they don't have any forelimbs with claws on them. No, ostriches kick you to death. And who, frankly, can blame them?

I'm reading a psychological thriller. This is rave material. CAST OF SHADOWS by Kevin Guilfoile is about a man who uses DNA found at the site of his daughter's murder to clone the murderer and see what he looked like. Complex and psychologically well grounded. As the cover blurb goes: "How far would you go to look into the face of your daughter's killer?"

Does he force grow the clone?

No, he doesn't. He has to wait for it to grow up.

Does he plan revenge at this stage? Wouldn't he be too old?
