I work at a small private American school in Nigeria, and most of the teachers are expats. Many come for just a few years. So I've said goodbye to lots and lots of people. Today a teacher who I really, really liked, someone who I played music with, told the kids she would not be returning next year. Later it was announced that because she was having a hard day, she would not be teaching her classes. Really, after 10 years of people leaving (amid their personal drama) I wasn't feeling sympathetic. I later apologized for brushing her off. I wasn't rude or anything, just really unsympathetic and that's not who I want to be.

I get both sides of that. Having been where I am for about 10 years now too - there are two kinds of people who work here - those that are in it for the long haul, and those who don't last more than a few months (or weeks).

I hope I never end up like one old boss I had, who'd worked for the company for over 20 years. Worked directly with him for 5 of those years, and he could never remember my name. He'd say "What you call this?" and snap his fingers at me to remind him. I can't say I miss him.

Haha, yeah, that sounds like fun. I've been at my current job for 9 years this year. In this industry there's a lot of staff turnover...2 years at an agency is average for most people, although we've got an unusually high proportion of people who have been here longer than that.

I've taken a couple days off work so I don't have to go out in the snow. It was supposed to be worse today, but so far there's not much coming down, just freezing cold and lots already on the ground. Oh, and my boiler isn't working properly, so not as cozy as I'd planned. :(
