I don't think it was autocorrect. She writes "receipt" for "recipe" fairly often. While I had not heard previously that this is a Southern usage, that certainly makes sense.

I could and did take the girl out of the South, but her time in the upper left quadrant has not quelled the Gator in a certain GRITS (Girl Raised In The South). Nor should it.

This Saturday, Dam-sel and I did not go out while Menolly was at her role-playing game. Dam-sel had already done fair amount of dining out this week; she, Menolly, and a few other friends spent Tuesday at a local place with a special for people who worked in the local school systems. Wednesday and Thursday, Dam-sel and I went to concerts not to Menolly's taste. James Taylor on Wednesday was preceded by a favorite Mexican place and we had sushi (a rarity for Dam-sel) before seeing Sugarland on Thursday.

By Friday, I was more than ready to return to the kitchen, making pan-roasted chicken thighs and steamed broccoli. On reflection, neither Dam-sel or I wanted to go out Saturday evening, so I made a fresh-ingredient version of sloppy joes and a green salad.

Sounds delicious

We had jaffles for dinner last night .. and Trev made a cracker of a passionfruit self saucing pudding ... it was deliciously cakey and the sauce was perfect .. not too sweet yet delightful .. served with pouring cream .. yum 😋

Today we're having a Sunday roast .. port and veggies .. just felt like something traditional tonight ;)

So we settled on roast pork with all the trimmings :biggrin:

Though I never really like the smell of roasting port :( 🤷‍♀️

Dinner yesterday was another tomato soup.

See, my mother and grandmother both made the most amazing tomato soup. When my mother died, I wasn't too worried, because I had all her recipe books, but I left them in storage for many years.

Not too long ago, I finally got them out of storage, but you can imagine my dismay when, on going through them, there was no recipe for her damned tomato soup.

Facing the dismal prospect of never again enjoying a tomato soup, the GF and I decided to try and recreate it from 10 year+ old memories of how it tasted, and only the vaguest recollections of her method and ingredients.

To my great joy, this latest attempt was as close as damnit.

I think all we need to do on the next attempt is to use fresh tomatoes instead of the whole peeled tinned ones, and maybe add a little celery.

wow well done to you both .. thats a pretty epic achievement.

Good for you even trying and not giving up at the first hurdle.

I had a favourite satay sauce we used to get in a restaurant .. and I was determined to replicate it .. and I did. Greatest kitchen coup ever .. and I still have it today. Its one of our fave meals.

Today we had a bunch of friends over .. the day was perfect, the sun was out .. so was nice in the sun .. we lit the brazier and had that going too .. put on a bbq and enjoyed the outside till about 5pm when the sun had well and truly gone down and it was getting a little chilly. We moved indoors and had coffee and enjoyed the wood heater and the flames licking up against the large glass door ..

Just perfect in every conceivable way

My eating habits are about to change drastically. At my consult with the plastic surgeon, she told me I have to lose at least 20 to 30 lbs. before she'll consider putting me on an operating table for 10 to 12 hours. She suggested I look in to the ketogenic way of eating, whereas I have had slow, but steady, success with Atkins in the past.

I spoke with both my hematologist and my oncologist, and both feel either woe will do me good. So, I have the Atkins book I used before, and a keto primer recommended by someone I know who had success with that woe, on order and will begin reading and comparing, and then starting.

There is no moderation with these woe's. I know neither SD nor Dam-sel will go all in on these, and to eat the high fat these plans entail can be dangerous if you don't also cut the carbs. So, most likely I'll be on my own. I see a lot of sliced deli meat, and maybe buffalo-style chicken wings, in my future.

Oh definitely .. 10-13kgs is not that much. You should have no problem dropping that amount of weight. It would be way worse if you had a target double that amount?


You must in pretty good shape. Im not familiar with the Atkins diet .. is it purely protein and vegetables? If so that would do it. Youd be surprised how much you will just drop cutting carbs and sugar out of the diet.

My daughter who is a body builder .. think fitness model .. eats 7 to 8 meals a day. Its a lot of food to get through .. I literally could not do it. But she eats mainly protein and veg. And she is very much into not denying yourself anything .. so if she feels like chocolate, she will eat chocolate. But not hog out on chocolate .. have a piece or two.

Good luck with it though. I cant imagine you having any problems with it at all. Thats an achievable target.

And yeah whats with the woes? Thats funny 😂

WOE = Way Of Eating. The acronym is an apt metaphor for what this dietary shift implies.

Deli meat is full of stuff that is not good for you. Making that a major pillar of diet will cause other problems. Don't even get me started on how I feel about her subsisting on the wings of my beloved buffalo!

Dam-sel and I will need to adapt some, certainly, but I don't see supporting two cuisines at each meal to be a realistic course. Menolly claims she can just take care of herself, but that would degrade household cohesion. The kitchen is not set up for parallel operation, and I am a firm believer in taking meals together, not on a staggered schedule. We will find a way forward that works for all.

I am sure you will..

If its at all helpful .. eating delicious proteins and an array of vegetables is a yummy way for meals to be appealing to all the family and you all get to enjoy the benefits.

My daughter pretty much cooks things in a wok or a non stick fry pan .. without oil or butter of course. She seasons with salt, peppers, chilli, garlic, soya, fresh herbs etc .. and I LOVE eating the meals she makes cos yum.

I dont diet .. I have no sense of self discipline and I hate depriving myself .. ever .. of food. But its quite amazing how simple yet yummy eating aids weight loss.

The whole family can enjoy getting into shape together .. which is so much more effective than just one person having to diet on their ownsome.

::shrug:: The GF and I do it. Sometimes we share elements of a meal, and other times we each have something completely separate. It's totally doable, and only very rarely inconvenient.

No doubt we can and will, but the logistics (and, frankly, politics) of different meals for different people will take some adjustment.

Not as much adjustment as Menolly will have to deal with. I just seem to have hit one of the stiff spots in adapting to what the path forward needs to be. I'll get past it.

Dinner tonight baked spuds, mince something or other, veg and topped with cheese and sour cream ;) :P

And last night Trev made cherry pudding .. its flourless and made with almond meal .. AND he made custard to go with ;)

Back when our major food "exception" was that I was cooking my older son 2 eggs every morning to help him re-gain weight lost in the Type 1 Diabetes episode, (it was pretty bad) his younger brother apparently told him he wished he could have T1D so he could get 2 eggs every morning.
It's like, "Nononono, you don't want that!"

No... actually, things can get way more complicated than that.

I had just been thinking of asking her what things she would miss most...
I'm thinking the big losses would be bread, pasta, fruit(!), along with... desserts & anything containing sugar.

Do you think part of it is that you are freaked out by the component of intentionally bringing on ketosis?


Last night, we had a curry with cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, spinach, canned stewed tomatoes, with brown rice.
P.S. GIANT thank-you's to sky and SD for encouragement on me starting up cooking again. I did not make that curry, but... things have improved in the area of me contributing to the family's food prep enormously.
