Just finished Dan Simmons' The Terror, and I really enjoyed it.

If anyone elected not to pick this one up because of The Time Traveler short story/essay, you are missing out on an exceptional novel.

To all you fans looking for quality stand-alone books, look no further. The Terror is what you need!

Finishing up House of Chains. It really seems that I should be enjoying Erickson more based upon all the positive buzz that's out there. I just feel like he's developed such a huge world that he can't devote any meaningful time to any storylines. The story, while broad, feels somehow "thin".

Will be moving on to the first book of the "Deathgate Cycle" next.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. Just got my hands on Bank's Steep Approach to Garbadale as well as The Somnambulist and Liz Williams' Bloodmind. Perfect little stack for the weekend, I hope!

Just finished Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" - loved it. A good ending, too, which I don't expect these days from the books I enjoy!

Just started his "Neverwhere" which reads like it is - as a BBC TV series. (Crap writing, interesting storyline)

Just started reading The Summoner - a debut novel by Gail Martin. I'm not expecting much from this one as it sounds like a pretty cliche plot, but the inclusion of necromancy might keep this interesting.

I will be reading Tehanu soon, once this semester ends. Probably around April.

Hoping for A Dance with Dragons before the end of the year--if not, I'll settle for a Fatal Revenant.

Just finished Justina Robson's Keeping it Real. A fun and entertaining read, quite different from what this short-listed author has accustomed us to.

Another Pyr offering, another good read!

Check the blog for all the details!

Finished The Summoner. As noted before, very bland cliched plot.

Just got a hold of Bakker's The Thousandfold Thought so I'm working on a re-read of the first two books to refresh my memory.

Finished The Satanic Verses last night. Very good book, with a strong--and slightly unexpected--ending.

Oh I am. I mean, a chapter entitled 'Absence of gravitas' full of witty banter, conjecture and jokes? That's why I like Banks so much :-)

I am the same, either of them and I'll be a happy man.
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

I'm reading Gabriel García Márquez' One Hundred Years of Solitude. It's a very easy read so far, and I like the style a lot. The book takes the fantastic in its stride (which I suppose is to be expected--this book is pretty much the definition of Magic Realism).

Just finished Before They Are Hanged. If you enjoyed Abercrombie's debut, I daresay you'll love this one.

It's got everything which made The Blade Itself a good read, but the sequel is also a marked improvement in every aspect. A satisfying read, to say the least!
