Absolution...good word....I go for a bit more, not just release from guilt but a rising above guilt,,a creating from the conflictiing a third or fourth etc future...which now seems quite literally possible for each character. The early episodes were some the most " unreal" therefore metaphoric, but its difficult for me to say I have a favorite episode.I mean the ending of the 4th season has to be the most " unreal". I will say the episode of Eko and Jin going after Michael..the landscape as a interior mental state( like the Land) was used at its best. Charlie's Dream's episode had some of the most overt Surrealistic photography and scenes ...or howabout Eko facing down Smokey? I could go on,,and on,,what a show. Just a few weeks to go!

Yes the Producer/ writers have kept it a secret from even the cast.
One actor, at least, knows how it ends.
Spoiler
Matthew Fox
has already filmed the last scene of the series. Yes, the last scene has already been filmed! That's planning, for you! I think there can be only one reason they would have done that:

aging. Which means the last scene is going to be either a flashback or going back in time.

I'm Murrin wrote:I just watched the ep again on TV (apparently the gap between UK and US broadcast is shorter than I thought--only a few days), and it clicked in my head what was going on at the end there, why it worked, in a more specific sense than what I got from the first viewing. The rat died, as Faraday explained, because there was no reference frame, no way for her brain to know what was past and what was future, she was unstuck. Desmond had the same problem, and needed to find some way to "fix" things in his head. By both arranging and then fulfilling the promise to call Penny, he created events that were specific and fixed within both his past and future timelines, and significant enough to be meaningful, allowing his mind to relearn where each thread belonged in relation to the other, and restoring his equilibrium.
I just re-watched this, and re-remembered what an awesome episode this was.

I am pretty darn happy about this re-watch. The gems are worth rediscovering.

... and I still say it was love that saved Desmond. What's a better 'anchor' than one's true love?

I have a t-shirt that says "Desmond is my constant."

As we named our first born Desmond, it carries more significance than if I was just hot for Henry Ian Cusick.

That's pretty cool. (And I am noticing that that is not actually denying being hot for Henry Ian Cusick. :))

He's a good looking chap. Not quite my type, but who knows?
Given the right circumstances and the correct amount of booze (copious amounts), I might do him.
But I'd much rather be him than be in him.
