Yeah, it's kind of like getting to book 4 of the Malazan series. :lol: Well, not really. Hobb actually explains stuff as she goes along. :lol:

I'm kind of picky as far as fantasy goes. The overall quality of the genre reminds me of prog rock's cesspool. I rarely venture beyond the pillars of George Martin, SRD, and Tolkien (and Le Guin, of course). I might make an excursion later for Vance.

I read too fast to be able to afford being picky. :D I draw the line at Brooks and Eddings, but I'll read most anything else, even if it's just once.

Daniel is so intent on shipping the Solomonic gold to Russia and keeping it out of Isaac's hands. Is it because he wants to keep Isaac on the right path instead of going all mumbo-jumbo with Alchemy?

I just finished Quicksilver, Spiral, and am a little tentative about continuing the Baroque Cycle, is it worth slogging through?

Remember, he was called back to Europe to more or less undertake that task. I think Waterhouse is also trying to keep the Scientific Revolution more or less on track. I think he equates alchemy with monarchy, and the scientific method with parliamentary rule. The old and mystical needs to make way for the new and logical.
danlo, if you have read Quicksilver and weren't entertained too much, you probably shouldn't keep going.

...no I enjoyed the hell o/o it (maybe ended a bit abruptly) ---it's just that the changing POV in The King of the Vagabonds has me a little worried...(I've heard great things about The System of the World)

IIRC, Quicksilver began with Waterhouse, then shifted to Jack and Eliza. Confusion picks up with Jack, which is one of the best parts of the Cycle, and then shifts back to Waterhouse and Eliza. There really are three main characters/POVs in the story, but they become more involved with each other farther in. The problem in Quicksilver is that half-way through you feel like the story ended midstream and another totally different story started. This gets rectified.
