My gf automatically assumes a book is bad if I like it and it can be even vaguely connected to sci-fi / fantasy. 
It took me years to get her to read the Chrons and the DT. Nowadays, I just leave books I think she'll like lying around, and refuse to recommend books to her.
(Just got her started on the Amtrak Wars actually. I wait in trepidation...
