I've watched re-runs of My Favorite Martian. Around the same time that I was tuning into repeats of I Dream of Jeannie and Get Smart. And the original Star Trek. Oh, and the original Twilight Zone. A time when I had a romance with 50's/60's television.

Speaking of I Dream of Jeannie, I guess Larry Hagman might have been remembered only as the star of that show...but then along came Dallas and boy, did he ever become identified with J.R. Ewing. He was J.R.

Yeah, but when does he ever have a role that's not "wise mentor type leader guy in a sci-fi flick"? Even when he's not Picard, he's still Picard. (Or voice acting, which he does a good bit of.)

And he has never been a "star", he will always be the character actor.

I agree, Usivius. Patrick Stewart is, I guess, in the same boat as his compatriot Ian McKellen: both have appeared in successful film franchises but they're still more or less able to do smaller independent films without the Hollywood baggage (or entourage). A Hollywood "star" always seems to imply a one-dimensional persona; thank goodness Stewart and McKellen don't fit that criteria.

Arnold.

Now, what's interesting about Arnold is, imho, that he was totally typecast with the Terminator BUT he never played the bad guy in any other film he's every made.
But because he's so typecast as the evil Terminator it's actually been to his advantage playing someone so opposite to it.
He's expected to kill everyone in the room even when he's playing the part of a loving father.
(Ok, he usually does kill everyone in the room but they're all bad guys!)

No way, HLT. I for one will always remember Arnold for his stirring performance in "Kindergarten Cop."

The difference between actors who were trained for and on the stage, and those who have only ever really appeared on film. Alec Guinness and Kenneth Branagh spring to mind as well. The difference is always noticeable I think.

And he had a good turn in Alien 4...

I saw Alien 4 in theatre (insert wince smiley here), and the second biggest audience reaction was to Mr Hedaya's back hair.

Will Ed O'Neil be anyone but Al Bundy? I've checked. He's been busy doing all kinds of stuff but it won't erase my memory of Al.
