Okay, I watched the original ending, and I'm very glad I did. I thought the theatrical ending was a brave choice,
having the main character die at the end.
But the original one actually preserves the message which was built up over the entire movie. I read in another talkback that the moment when the vampire leader burns himself in the sunlight, when Will's character steals his woman, this is when Smith concludes that these "creatures" have lost all their humanity. But ironically, it is precisely their retained humanity which causes them to selflessly risk themselves to save a loved one. That moment is when they
displayed their lingering humanity, rather than the opposite conclusion Smith makes. That's cool. And it is Smith who is losing his own humanity, by not recognizing it in others. I suppose you can give him a pass because he is trying to help them by finding a cure. But this relationship seems more like trying to save dying animal than a fellow intelligent, self-conscious being. He actually shows more remorse killing his dog than he does killing these sick humans.
Got to put this one on my to read list.

I watched I Am Legend, starring Will Smith. A reprogrammed virus meant to cure all cancers is widely distributed in New York, and it kills a lot of people & turns the rest into rabid zombies that cannot stand sunlight. Smith's character works to find a cure for the killer rabid virus within his laboratory fortress at night and roams the deserted streets of Manhattan by day with his German shepherd dog in search of other unaltered humans. There's too many plot distractions and pointless filler in this movie for me to recommend it. I thought Smith's character reciting Shreck was a bit much. Yeah, I Am Legend had some promise but there was too much stuff that delayed the plot, like the extended zombie chase scenes, and the moments when Smith's character talks to mannequins. Not a terrible movie, but not worth bothering with, either.
