I wonder if it was a party line or a by-approval system ... I mean, if some Bloodguard shamed himself through failure, could the others cut him off from communication? Would he be left thinking "aww c'mon guys ... guys ... guys?"

The Old Lords probably did not develop the Meld because they did not have quite the vision for EarthPower that the latter-day people of the Land had. Otherwise, they would have been able to see Foul for what he was early on.

Linden had the health-sense from the beginning. The description of her "possession" of Covenant was very similar to the description of Elena's attempted meld with him. I strongly suspect it was the same power, but with Linden's perception of it being the only real difference.

The mind speech of the Haruchai is probably of a (slightly) different nature, as was the bell language of the Elohim. Then there was the Kemper's learned gold-lore version. It was "compatible" with the Haruchai's mind speech, to the extent that they recognized it and were able to refuse its compulsion.
