Most of my favourites are indie bands, I don't really consider them rock and I doubt you would too. That said, the Datsuns are great fun and I've always liked Placebo, who lie somewhere along the line between Indie and proper Rock.

I like the punky/rocky women-band Sleater-Kinney a hell of a lot though, and am pimping them without respite at the moment due to their recent album release. There are some free downloads on their official website if anyone is interested.

I'm loathed to mention the gender thing, but I'm hoping I can get some of KW's resident feminists interested, if they aren't already familiar with the band. The truth is that when you rock as hard as S-K do, gender becomes entirely irrelevent.

The whole "post" thing discussed in earlier posts has always indicated to me a more ironic and free form take on a more earnest but influential previous movement - in this sense I am post-punk (talking heads, wire, television), post-(classic) rock (not jazzy noodling like Tortoise but prob a lot falling under the indie label: pixies, smashing pumpkins, arcade fire, spoon) and...well non-metal altogether. Life is too serious to be taken seriously! Two words: spinal tap!

as far as punk goes, the Ramones are the best...period
they r my favorite for sure but other punk bands i like are sex pistols, oingo boingo (which is a kinda punky newavey type thing) n so on. heavy metal and rock ones i guess would be led zeppelin, van halen, foghat, kiss, ozzy osbourne, black sabbath, def leppard, nirvana..... im not too big on the more modern rock, im just not a fan, its kinda all soundin the same to me at this point. every bands going for that unique maroon 5 guy's voice but everybody's got that now so its not that unique... o yea gotta put spinal tap in there

Wasn't sure where to post this, but resurrecting an old thread seemed appropriate!

Frenzal Rhomb are a comic Punk band from my beloved Aussie town.

But this song rips my heart out every time I listen to it. It's typical aussie frankness - I urge you to listen to it

I love that song, but yeah, it's not Great White (and yes, I get the reference). The song I was talking about is Rock Me. As for metal in general, I like Whitesnake and Zebra a lot, too.

Just to clear up a several years old argument - The Police were post-punk in the same way they were pre-techno, but their music was white reggae!

Meeeh. The Clash stand out as the only punk act with an ear to me. They were the only of the original punk acts with any kind of melodic pop sensibility. Not that the Ramones are garbage, I just don't really think any punk creation holds a candle to London Calling. It's really Punk Rock's Magnum Opus.

There are too many different ways to make good Rock music. It's proven itself a remarkably elastic genre of music.

The Clash is about the only punk band I still listen to. I don't know if the Jam or the Cult were considered punk, but I still listen to them too. Not much else held up in my mind; a few songs did, like Stiff Little Finger's Tin Soldier, and a few 999 tunes, and some Generation X. The Ramones and Sex Pistols were always overrated IMO. I enjoyed them for what they were, but I really didn't think that was very much as far as musicianship went.

Oh, and Oingo Boingo was never anywhere close to being punk, musically, or chronologically.

There were some classic punk tunes that still deserve an occasional listen when you have energy to expend. Alternative Ulster by SLF, Anarchy in the Uk by Sex Pistols, Ever Fallen in Love with Someone by Buzzcocks, The Kids Are United by Sham 69, White Riot by The clash, all get a go on my stereo when I'm in the mood, but i could never listen to a whole album any more.

Other bands took up the attitude but made more timeless albums, by taking other genres and injecting a bit of punk into them. The Pogues and The Pixies spring to mind, I'm sure I could list alot more if I thought about it a bit longer.

Green Day, though classed as American Punk, don't fit the category for me. I think they've written some amazing, classic, songs. But i would consider them more derived from ska and rock than punk.

Lots of people still consider themselves punks, but they're mostly under sixteen. I think punk evolved into something else, but kept the name.
