Not the beers I drink.

Actually, that's not exactly accurate. A "session" ale for me is an IPA at around 6%-7%. But many of my favorites are easily as strong as wine. And much tastier, too.

Meades can have almost as much variety as wine or beer. They can be sweet or dry, made from many different kinds of honey, be infused with fruit or herbs, etc.

Vraith, why wait around for 6 weeks for some prison hooch when you can have a quality homebrewed ale in 3?

Just teasing. I hope it turns out well. I've never made wine, but my dad has been making it for decades. He has never produced anything drinkable in 6 weeks, as far as I know. It usually takes quite a bit longer. And I'd use a hydrometer if I were you, to make sure fermentation is complete, before you bottle that stuff. A bottle bomb can be much worse than just a splintery, sticky mess.

Z, those kinds of beers are beyond my price range in any quantities above a bottle or two. But when I can get em, I love em.

Cambo, price is the 2nd reason I homebrew. It's a lot of work, but you can make beer just as good as (and in most cases, much, much better than) the best microbrews for less than 50 cents per bottle.

Beer prices are getting nuts. My favorite 6-packs often go for $11. Some of the best (Hopslam, Expedition Stout) go for $17 a 6-pack.

But for the most part it's still cheaper than drinking wine.

When it's done, I plan invite a few friends over to partake [or perhaps "force it down their throats" is more likely...]
I fear the outcome of this experiment.

Anyway, Z, I do plan to start homebrewing in the fairly near future. At least half the guys from my martial arts school do so, so I'm never short of product...but now that I'm going to be spending most of the year in Minnesota, I'm going to have to become self-sufficient.

Most of my favorites sell for around $9 / six pack, or $14-$15 for 12. But Session isn't bad, and you can get a 12 pack here for $11.99. Today I'm trying Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve, which I got 12 of for $10.99, and it's actually better than I expected (about on par with Session... that is, what I'll drink when I want to be cheap).

The best bang for my buck right now is Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Kroger usually has it for $7.49. It's an aggressive IPA with plenty of hop flavor, though I think they're cutting corners on the aroma hop additions in order to make it that cheap ... not much aroma. But for a 7-ish per cent ABV beer, it's quite a value.

I just had a berry mojito at a restaurant in downtown Orlando, and I have to say, it has gone to my head quicker than any drink I've had in recent years. I think I need to sit here for a while before I drive back to my hotel.:P

It was made with some kind of acai vodka.
