no, it is time to retire Mallorys if it is causing these problems. convert it to actual thought-processing games. get rid of the abc's and other silliness. limit the number of currently running games.

i will retire my crown.

Mallorys has less posts in it than the Tank, you know. ;)

I knew what I was talking about in the post right before yours, Sarge...

I'm glad to hear you're not too much clinging to the Mallory's in general, however, a few things from there, like the parodies from the Bad Writing and Illustration, should be preserved. As for the general, the artwork galleries are at least not less important that the discussions of the text, they are irreplaceable, unique works of art.

And for now this is mostly talk. If Vain arrives and says that it all goes to migrate well - no need to worry, if a certain requirement exists, it will be easier to see at least how much should be left. Otherwise, we can talk, or perhaps, if the actual size is really a serious factor in the problem, a few of the threads nobody cares much about can be removed at least to see what happens.

Two closed threads I've seen in the Mallory's (the old word association and guess the next poster games) have more posts than all the dissection forum, the Hall and the Gallery taken together. (Actually, the Gallery with the Chrons artworks is one of the smallest forums, barely above a hundred topics, won't do much good in the terms of space anyway, and the images there are linked from external servers) And I'm pretty sure the Tank has some highly needed "treasures" of that sort.

I don't know how it was done, but the Cantina on the old Hangar was kept intact so I didn't have to go in and redo all the links in the Index of Recipes in the Galley here on the Watch when the Hangar was migrated.

Could something similar be done to preserve the Album and Laborium?

It was done by leaving the old Hangar extant.

And yeah...migrating the EZ Board was...well...easy in comparison. Our database is sitting at over a GB.

Vain has increased the available size, and says he may have a way of migrating, he just doesn't have time at the moment to get back into it. He'll probably put in an appearance soon.

The albums are going to be a problem as Murrin mentioned though. But don't worry, we'll know in plenty of time to be able to save stuff manually if it's necessary.

Not that technically savvy, but is there a way of exporting the DB in text only, so that all posts could be downloaded by members who wanted them prior to any wipe? I think the long history of this forum and the lengthy archives are one of its most charming aspects. And WADR to newer members, I don't think they should be weighing in on what is expendable and what is not expendable. Whether or not they are appreciated, I've put a lot of effort into my contributions to this forum over the years, and I've found immense value in the contributions of others as well. I'd hate for all those posts to be lost in cyberspace like tears in the rain.

Time to die.

No posts will be lost whatever happens. If it comes down to losing posts vs migrating, keeping posts will win out.

Av, thank you very much for this information, I haven't seen Vain here for so long I was starting to get worried. Wonderful to hear this)

Theoretically speaking, Vain and Jay should have ftp access, so it should be possible for them to download the database through ftp, though not sure if the form is likely to be much human-readable, I haven't tried downloading and reading bare databases of forums. However, this should be not needed - see what Av said. Just in case, I'll try to check something, but I don't have any good results yet.

I'm not so long on the forum as a registered member because at the times I first visited the EZBoards and the Watch I didn't register, on any forums at all, and I still register rarely and almost don't post anywhere but on KW. I usually don't like the atmosphere, one of the main ingredients of that atmosphere being the attitude to new people as less worthy automatically, and KW was perhaps the main thing that made me think the forums may be different. I hope you didn't mean anything like that, but I think your argumentation could be better without saying this, just saying you find all the posts not expendable, without bringing the time on the Watch in.

...
:roll: If you would please read the posts more or less attentively before preparing to die... Apart from the simple fact I don't decide on this (or did your find my arguments so good you were sure everyone will agree? ;) ), I didn't say a thing about the thread I took your first quote here from. I meant the closed 9999 posts threads that hang in the back pages of the Mallory's, and they could be archived and then deleted. So, the same read-only state they're in already, just without being 20000 posts more here. And that's if Vain doesn't react and the forum starts working like Unreal Tournament on Pentium II.

Which we already know is not happening :D

My apologies Effaeldm if I've given offense as it appears I have, my post was not directed at you specifically. I just don't like some of the comments (not yours) that were made which I find to be somewhat demeaning and flippant. I'll not say more.

Noone wants to see any posts lost if it's avoidable. Mallorys, maybe, since there's generally no actual content there (other than some exceptions already mentioned). I've poked fun at the tank once or twice, but I have no interest in seeing it wiped clean (and the last mention was actually a jab at null/mallorys).

I guess you are referring to me, then, Ron? If so, go ahead and let it all out.

I don't know Ananda, did you make demeaning or flippant comments?

Ananda, if I had wanted to mention you specifically, I would have. I think my remarks are not that difficult to interpret, actually.

I had a longer post here, but thought better of it. I'm letting bygones be bygones.

I see. I was the only new member suggesting deletions of content (but not the only member suggesting deletion of content) in order to stop the database from becoming corrupted therefore preserving the site as a whole. You said the new members should have no input in this and that the comments from this mysterious new member(s) were flippant and demeaning. Can I ask which new members you were referring to, please? And, how much time must elapse before a member can have an opinion?

I am for bygones, etc. but I am also for being straight forward. If you will say these things, just be open about it.

And this poem suggests my feelings about how important opinions on the internets are.

Gnosis
Thought is deeper than all speech,
Feeling deeper than all thought:
Souls to souls never can teach
What unto themselves was taught.

We are spirits clad in veils;
Man by man was never seen;
All our deep communing fails
To remove the shadowy screen.

Heart to heart was never known;
Mind with mind did never meet;
We are columns left alone
Of a temple once complete.

Like the stars that gem the sky,
Far apart though seeming near,
In our light we scattered lie;
All is thus but starlight here.

What is social company
But a babbling summer stream?
What our wise philosophy
But the glancing of a dream?

Only when the Sun of Love
Melts the scattered stars of thought,
Only when we live above
What the dim-eyed world hath taught,

Only when our souls are fed
By the Fount which gave them birth,
And by inspiration led
Which they never drew from earth,

We, like parted drops of rain,
Swelling till they meet and run,
Shall all be absorbed again,
Melting, flowing, into one.

Ananda, I did not attribute what I perceived to be demeaning or flippant posts specifically to new members; that is your own inference, one I consider inaccurate. So I'm not singling you out, even by implication.

And so it's clear, the longer portion of the post which I removed was not directed at anyone specifically. The portion addressed to you was what I kept.

BTW, as a rejoinder to your quotation, I offer the following:
Plato wrote:Socrates: ... Some things I have said of which I am not altogether confident. But that we shall be better and braver and less helpless if we think that we ought to enquire, than we should have been if we indulged in the idle fancy that there was no knowing and no use in seeking to know what we do not know; - that is a theme upon which I am ready to fight, in word and deed, to the utmost of my power.

I like the quote, nihil. But, I think we can have it both ways. Enjoy the babbling sommar stream! It is nice! But dont be concerned when it washes away.
