BRB, washing feet.
I live in a rather... icky neighborhood, and it's pitch black when I walk to the train station in the morning. That pop/crunch is a very familiar sensation, though thankfully I have yet to experience it unshod. A couple of weeks ago I tripped over a live rat. I don't know if it was just sitting in the middle of the sidewalk, or if it was running across, but my foot connected with it quite solidly and we both squeaked. It ran and squeezed under the door of a nearby restaurant, apparently unharmed.
