The play ends right after the Christine and Raoul leave on the boat...singing a reprise of "All I Ask of You." The Phantom (Michael Crawford, ahhhhh such a voice) sings...
you alone can make my song take flight..
it's over now the music of the night..
But it's done very softly...
The lights dim...and then a spotlight shines on a lone chair with the mask and a rose resting on it.
It ends that way, no mirror smashing and so forth...
There were a few things in the movie that weren't in the play, the sword fight for instance, Madame Giry's tale, and Raoul being trapped in the water cage...weren't in it. But, I find the movie to be a glorious adaption of the play. All the music is there and the cast was excellent. Emmy just takes my breath away as Christine.
Pitiful creature of darkness
what kind of life have you known?
God give me courage to show you
You are not alone...

Interesting....I remember Meg holding up the glowing mask, but I don't remember ever seeing the rose.

Which production did you see? I saw the original cast on Broadway back in the 80's with Russ, and saw a touring production of it in the late 90's in San Fran with Stephen. Both of them ended the way I described. So, I'm interested in what one you saw?

I've seen it twice on tour. It could be that I just missed the rose altogether. I'm usually transfixed by the glowing mask.

I saw it on tour one of the times it came to Detroit, and I also remember a glowing mask, just as dlb described it.

It's always possible they might have done little tweaks here and there on tour. I know they added an entire scene to Les Mis at one point...

Sometime between the first time I saw it on tour and Detroit, and the second time, a few years later, they added a scene where Jean Valjean met a certain little girl in the woods -- right before he bargains for the child's freedom from her abusive "guardians".

Oh! I've only seen Les Mis on tour once, but I have the 10th Anniversary concert memorized. I saw that scene that you're referring to during my tour version, but it's not on the DVD.

From what I remembered in the newspaper review from the second time I saw it, they added that particular scene after the play was about ten years old.

So perhaps you saw it after it was added but your dvd was filmed before they added it?

OMG!!! I love The Phantom Of The Opera!!! Dang, i knew i was missing out when i didnt see it in theaters. I couldnt drive myself and none of my friends wanted to see and my parents wouldnt take me. I told my parents i wanted to see it so bad. I just saw it last Sunday night. omg it took my breath away. it looked so amazing in the trailers but it was so much better than what i thought. I've watched it ever night so far. The Phantoms voice is so amazing, i love him so much. When i took my finals for high school this week i kept singing the songs in my head the whole time. Words cant do the movie justice because none can say how amazing it is.
You know i always thought they meant keep your hand at the level of your eyes so he couldnt choke you. I mean it always looked that way to me. He has an obession with choking people i think.
Raise up your hand to the level of your eyes!
Nothing can save you now
except for perhaps Christine.
Start a new life with me,
buy his freedom with your love.
Refuse me and you send your lover to his death!
This is the choice,
This is the Point of No Return!!
