My copy of the First Chronicles isn't within easy reach at the moment and I'm currently mobility impaired so that I really don't feel up to looking for it, but can someone check out the chapter of IllEarth War where Covenant is first translated to the land by Elena?
I'm positive that Covenant's health sense returned before he was exposed to Hurtloam. I recall him seeing the ill of dukkha's injuries.

Thats after his hurtloam experience i think. He is given hurtloam against his wishes, then dukkha is brought into the room. I dont think dukkha was there when he was summoned.

Oops.
Already, he seemed to be regaining some of the added dimension of sight which characterised the Land. He could see into the Waynhim, could feel with his eyes what had been done to it.
The Hurtloam arrives at the end of the next page.

Woot! Go me!
While we're on the subject, remember when Covenant first came to the Land he had a level of perception that the natives did not? I'm referring to the Wightbridge where he saw the Ward before anyone else did.
I wonder if Troy had not had hurtloam applied to his eye sockets how the health sense would have functioned for him..

I think his perception of the Word of Warning was because of the ring - Drool had influence over his ring, making it red, by use of the Staff of Law, and Drool made the Word with the Staff also, so when Covenant got close to it, there was a resonance.

That's a good question..once he went blind again, did his perceptions change?

Excellent question. In TIW, on Gallow's Howe, he could feel the emanations of Covenant's ring. Of course after he got all Forestaled up he had his music, the only sense he required. (I'd sure like to hear more about that, but tough noogies for me.

)
It seems to me - and this is just a hunch, mind - that the Real World arrivals to the Land all seem to end up with heightened perceptions
beyond what the denizens enjoy, and it's usually related to their previous burdens/vocations in "reality." It seems to have some spiritual purpose or function... it's not simply a matter of First Cause or Accident or whatever. If anything it seems to act as a goad, characterwise. I'm inclined to think that the Creator wills it, in order to motivate the visitors without compromising their free will, and that's why the cause/effect thing gets so spotty. The Creator simply desires it and thus the means are secondary and flexible.
This opinion, of course, completely strays from the topic, which is about whys and hows.
EDIT: I took out some spoiler-tagged speculation because Matrix and others found it... spoilery. So sorry - I want to emphasize it was the loosest sort of speculation, not based on anything but the implications of health sense in the Land. My bad -- I apologize.
Wow, sorry to ramble so very OT. I've been rereading Runes, can you tell? *wanders off to look for speculation threads*

Oh crap, I shouldn't have read jwaneeta's spoiler. Runes I can handle, but I don't want even a whiff of info that may possibly have come from Fatal Revenant. Arrrgh. (Yes, I'm staying the hell away from the FR forum.)
Anyway, back to Troy. My understanding was that the acid of the Vortex creature "burned" away all of Troy's extra-dimensional perceptions. He became an ordinary blind man, exactly as if he was in the "real" world. I skimmed through the Gallows Howe chapter and I could not find where it's specified that Troy felt an emanation from Covenant's ring. Covenant put his ring in Troy's hand, yes, and after that, "the touch of the pulsing ring exalted Troy." But Troy never actually sensed the ring from a distance, as far as my interpretation of that scene goes. If you were to put a pulsing white gold ring into any person's hand, they'd feel pretty darn exalted.

AGREED!!!! I didn't expect a spoiler in
this forum to be about FR. Can we either please keep them in the FR forum, or very clearly state that it's an FR spoiler???
Thanks.

I am so SO sorry about that. I got rid of it. Man, what a day I'm having.
I skimmed through the Gallows Howe chapter and I could not find where it's specified that Troy felt an emanation from Covenant's ring.
In the Gallow's Howe chapter at the end of Illearth War, Troy's frantic to help Elena, whose last battle can be heard all the way from Rivenrock:
"You!" he shouted stridently. "If you're too much of a coward to do anything yourself, at least give me a chance to help her! Give me your ring! - I can feel it from here. Give it to me! Come on, you bastard, it's her only chance."
It just puzzles me. At the beginning of the book, though, when Troy's life in "reality" is touched on, it's mentioned that even there he's extremely sensitive to the ambience and auras of ordinary objects: along with his mad skills at defining spatial relationships, it's how he gets around. So maybe "sensing" the ring is no more than what he could do before he ever came to the Land. It sort of sticks out, though, in context.
Again, sorrry that my previous post contained spec about Runes - this isn't the place for it and I apologize. I wasn't sufficiently mindful.
*creeps away*

Oops, I missed that line of Troy's. You're right, jwaneeta, he did feel the aura from Covenant's ring! Your explanation makes sense to me. I guess it just seemed to me like Troy had lost all sensitivity in his senses after the acid burn, because his near-helpless condition afterwards was such a grim contrast to his former state of Earthpowered sight.
Sorry for being grouchy about the spoiler thing. It's just that there was too much leaked info about Runes flying around KW before that book came out, so I didn't want a repeat scenario with Fatal Revenant.

kevins-watch wrote:Ok, now, my big question is, why couldn't anyone in the Land use health-sense during the Second Chronicles? I think SRD gave some answer in the GI along the lines of "because of the Sunbane", but personally, I just that answer is a little lame.-jay
I think the answer makes perfect sense. How could the inhabitants of the Land be attuned to any "health-sense" or "Earthpower" when it was so horribly corrupted by the sunbane?

Not only corrupted, but essentially broken, twisted, and all together screwed up. When the only power they knew was to shed blood,an act by itself a complete abomination to any in the first chronicles,by the *non-existance*of Earthpower they had no frame of reference to how things should be and how things were..................
