A lot of Edgar Allen Poe's short stories. They're freaky, and REALLY good. I recomend them a lot.

THE DARK LEGACY, a kid's fantasy about modern southern kids who go through a painting into a world where an evil pirate rules. Very engaging, with talking animal characters. Author Gail McAbee. First of a series.

At last I finished THE TSARINA'S GRANDDAUGHTER, a rough advance reading copy. What a horrible waste of a good idea. Between the brute of a hero, and the author's habit of using words she doesn't know the meaning of, I feel for the editor who has to repair this.

Moving on with a sigh of relief to Hemingway's A MOVEABLE FEAST, a memoir of his life and friends in 1920s Paris. Last night I finished the chapter on Gertrude Stein.

Looking back a few days, I absolutely loved BY SLANDEROUS TONGUES, a historical fantasy by Roberta Gellis & Mercedes Lackey. The bright and dark elves each have their favorite candidate to inherit the throne after the death of Henry VIII, and are battling to make it happen. Our hero, Denoriel, is assigned to protect and guide Elizabeth to the throne. The book -- the whole series -- is totally charming and fascinating.

Just picked up I Am Legend by Mathesson. It's a good thing too, three days without reading and my head was about ready to explode.

Finished last night: THALIDOMIDE KID by Kate Rigby. I was reluctant to read this review book about a boy with no arms -- it looked too grim. I was wrong. Daryl wins out, yes, but the focus of the book is not on his struggle and victory. It is about a boy and girl and the way they deal with being outsiders. Very human, very recognizable. At the ending I stopped dead with surprise.

It's not what you're born with, it's what you do with it. That's the message, engagingly told. I dreamed about Daryl the night after finishing the book; that's how real he was.

I've been reading Classic Fishing Stories, a collection of neat short stories on fly fishing. Thanks, BGB!

OLD MAN'S WAR by John Scalzi. It's a standout, won the John Campbell. I'll be moving right along to the sequel THE GHOST BRIGADES, & plan to pick up THE LAST COLONY next time I go to B&N.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Well, I was just wanting to drum up some interest in the group read. I'm selfish enough to believe that if I think it's worth doing, then everyone should feel the same! I love me some Mordant's Need! The poignancy of the charactor development, the complexity of the plot, the brilliance of it all. It's one of the most incredible and tragically underrated series of our times. The Tor, Artagel, The Castellan, Terisa, Gerarden, King Joyse, Lady Myste, Quiss, The Domne, The Perdon, The Fayle, Adept Havelock....oh, they are all so amazing in their differences and yet they all have something in common, their valor (whether epic or steadfast), their love for Mordant and what Mordant means to their personal way of life. It's simply inspirational. I've told SRD to his face that Mordant's Need is my favorite of his works and I've told him why and he loves that. He knows that each of his works speaks differently to each person. It doesn't demean his other work, it just is. I have also been shocked at the amount of people who don't think MN is worth reading. I want to change that. It's one of the few stories I have ever read that actually makes tears stream down my face in both JOY and GRIEF. The books evoke so much emotion from me. Therefore I am gonna pimp the read as much as I can, wherever I can. How do you like them monkeys!
