I can excuse you Desmond - it was dark, and we've most often seen him either clean shaven or bearded, not in between.
I recognised Mikhail when Keamy mentioned a Russian guy who speaks lots of languages, and then Omar said his name was Mikhail.
But I have watched seasons 1 through 4 very recently, so it's fresh in my mind.

LOL, I saw Andrew Divoff (Mikhail) in an episode of CSI Miami last year, and knew he was familiar, but, it took me about the whole episode to figure out why he was familiarwayfriend wrote:I saw the final scene; I did not recognize who was being carried off that Sayid saw. Now I feel stupid. (I did miss the first ten minutes, though.)
Also, I did not recognize Mikhail. I excuse this on the lack of an eye-patch.

I really think they should've done less eps., like season 4. That way their ideas wouldn't have to be spread so thin (uneventful episodes like last night's), and the revelations would come quicker.
I wonder who decides how many episodes they get to work with.

Wait wait wait ... If Mikhail was the eye-patched communications-room operator, wasn't he working for Ben and the Others? Isn't it "a change" if in the side-timeline he is with the bunch of guys who, in the first time-line, were mercenaries hired by Widmore to kill Ben and the Others?
I think that's the clue that unravels the whole puzzle...

I thought this was an excellent episode in that it moved the plot on the island(the important one) along considerably. We know now that candidates can (and probably do) prevent Urizen from leaving the island, and we know that something prevents him from outright killing them. We are seeing him start working on a loophole through this problem, and I don't think it involves taking anyone of the island with him (though that may work). If he orchestrates a conflict between his pieces and Widmore's people, he may be able to bypass the effect of Jacob's touch and have all of the candidates killed anyway.
Furthermore, I think that Urizen has the sickness that Dodgen spoke of, one that erodes trust in humanity and leaves them empty (as Sayid was explaining... "I can't feel pain" right before he cried out in pain when shot by a needle). In this case, Jacob acts as an agent that quarantines Urizen to prevent the rest of humanity from catching it. When Widmore says that everyone would cease to be, it could mean that everyone would cease to be "human." They would all be effectively in hell as a result because instead of being humans capable of feelings and change, they'd be empty husks.
Would convincing Urizen that humanity is good at heart cure him? I don't think so, but I do believe that could convince him to accept his imprisonment.

On the plus side, the Jin/Sun sideways scenes were very touching...yea, most of the rest could've been more interesting if handled differently, but the episode definately makes me see orange (Sun in the orange dress described as the color of love)
It's funny, looking at Keamy as the mercenary, I thought he was cute and in another part could be HAWT, but...He's HECKaCreepy, I think he creeps me out more than Ben in full "Back against the Wall" manipulation mode

the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

Well, it almost seemed this episode was about powerful fathers (Paik, Widmore), trying to eliminate their daughters' lovers.Murrin wrote:question: Why is Desmond there? I can't think of a reason why he would be needed. He's not even a candidate.

Desmond, even more than any of the candidates, has had some freaky things happen to him on the island. The time jumping thing in The Constant, the future flashes concerning Charlie's death, the incident that led to Oceanic 815's crash.
Maybe he has some kind of affinity to island phenomenon. Or to the alternate reality (side flashes). He did appear momentarily on 815. Unless he was simply seat hopping.
Frankly, I don't care. Desmond is one of the better characters, IMO, and I'm glad he's back. Poor sod.
Btw, I believe the Kwon written in the cave is Jin. In the side flash, Sun is still Paik. Since they made such a point about the separate rooms and names ...

Just as they're dragging whoever it is from the sub, my wife mutters, "Walt?"
The first time I glimpsed a face, I thought I was looking at another Sayid. The other one in the water didn't help. Then I recognized him.

As hokey as the "hit in the head and can't speak English" thing was... what if there's more to it.
In the alternate timeline, Sun can't speak English. What if the hit on the head caused her timelines to converge partially?
I think I read somewhere that the timelines might converge by the end of the season, but I'm not sure what that could mean... what if this is an indication of that?
And I am *so* going to have to try hard to keep from humming the Benny Hill theme next time Ol' Smokey appears

I think this is another sign that the two timelines are going to cross eventually. We've seen Jack with the appendectomy scar that he doesn't remember and now we've seen the crossover that Sun cannot speak English. I'll bet soon she'll not understand it when spoken. (Whoops, I see Akasri had posted while I was typing this up, but hey...)Murrin wrote: Sun's language loss is deliberate (Miles hangs a lantern on it), it has to be important. The way Richard reacts makes me wonder if our friend did something to her while she was unconscious. It would have effectively isolated her from everyone else, if they hadn't worked out a way for her to communicate.
Nice detective work there. That sounds cool. It seems like so much of the speculation about this series seems to frequently be better than the episodes themselves.Murrin wrote: What's coming in the flash sideways: Sun is taken to Jack's hospital, and probably comes into contact with Ethan and Claire, because of her pregnancy. Jin may be arrested in connection with what happened at the restaurant, taking him to the same police station where Sawyer and Miles work.
As for Desmond, I wonder if he will be taking the newest button pushing equivalent of "saving the world" on the island. His name is missing from the list of candidates we have seen so far, but have we seen them all? Did the Lock-less Monster either not see Hume's name or was keeping that secret? His name is missing from the candidates that have been revealed so far, so no marked off name, which is odd as so many people who were on the list and were marked off had been people I wouldn't have expected to have been on the list, like Boone. It's a bit flimsy, but there we are.

Yeah, that would piss so many people off.Murrin wrote: But there is no way in hell this series is going to end with Desmond and Penny seperated.
I was talking with a friend about the sideways, and he commented that maybe the flash-sideways are the result of Smokey getting off the island and fulfilling the wishes he made to the people he drew over to his side. Of course, since it would be a kind of deal-with-the-devil, things don't quite turn out as expected (Sayid and Nadia, for example). Also, the sideways are becoming less "happily-ever-after" and more tragic (as this week's episode implies).
